Senna Agius reflects on first Superbike outing with Penrite Honda at ASBK
Senna Agius
Senna Agius, 17, raced a Superbike for the first time last weekend when he plunged straight into the deep end for the penultimate lap of the 2022 Mi-bike Insurance Australia Superbike Championship at Phillip Island.
Senna qualified for 1.3 seconds Qualifying record set by Josh Waters but only a few tenths behind his Penrite Honda teammate Troy Herfoss.
Senna took a very respectable sixth place in the competition 12 rounds start game20 seconds behind race winner Bryan Staring in extremely dangerous conditions.
Senna once again affirmed the good point in second bout with eighth place, 13 seconds behind race winner Wayne Maxwell in good condition.
Agius was in a group vying for fifth place before getting into an accident through no fault of his own during the match. last race of the weekend.
When I spoke to him on Sunday afternoon, the youngster was a bit disappointed that his potential was thwarted after being knocked out in the final race.
Trev: So let’s jump into the deep end on the Penrite Honda Fireblade, and a pretty good first weekend mate. A bit disappointing at the end, but that’s out of your control, you must be very happy.
Senna Agius: “Yeah, I’m feeling good, I’ve been there… I was cautious because I knew at the end of the race it really showed who was the smart player in the first half, so I just played the game to keep put yourself in last place. It’s just something that I feel is about to happen, given the way the race is going. Unfortunately there’s nothing I can do, I just have to bear the consequences, but overall our first weekend was really good.
“Even in wet conditions, I have no experience riding this bike, really no wet road experience, I haven’t ridden on wet roads for more than a year since yesterday, and I have to very happy.
“The Bend is coming next weekend, we are going into a different style of track where I think I can be stronger here.
“Coming here for the first time on a Superbike was a bit difficult, so I’m looking forward to next weekend and working with you guys..”
Trev: Obviously the Moto2 bikes you ride in Europe are a lot lighter, have less power, so maybe not so brutally, and most of the laps aren’t breathtakingly fast on Phillip Island. You’re with a lot of boys in Europe, huge, highly competitive fields of hungry kids, how does it feel to come and jump in this pond with the old boys here ?
Senna Agius: “The established front superbike riders here are the right ones, they’re very fast, the lap times we took this weekend even compared to WSBK are pretty impressive basically the rules superstock switch.
“I did better than I thought with the acclimation, but I still need to learn how to get the most out of the bike, especially in qualifying, which is going to be very intense this weekend. I think if I had gone further on the grid, I might have escaped the mayhem in the first round a bit more.
“But everything to learn for next weekend, we have put the bike in a really good spot. Looking forward to making the most of next weekend.”
Trev: See you at Bend next weekend, good luck, and then back to Europe in FIM juniorGP Moto2 next year?
Senna Agius: “That’s right, let’s go back to Europe next year and hope to do some stuff here in January on the Superbike (NSW Summer Series), as it’s been the perfect exercise bike for me and helps me get skills needed to develop next year. It really highlights what I need to do next year, so there is no better opportunity for me than this weekend and next weekend to help me prepare for next year in Europe..”
Superbike action is happening at The Bend on Friday with the first session at 09:50 (South Australian time) and we’ll cover all sessions right here on MCNews.com.au.
