Scuba Diving Magazine Through the Lens Your Photo Contest Results


PADI’s Diving The journal published its results 2022 Your Lens Photo Contest. The competition has four imaging categories — Wide Angle, Macro, Behavior, and Compact Camera — and the competition also awards a grand prize. This time Boz Johnson’s stunning reflection shot of a flying fish in the waters of Anilao, Philippines beat out more than 2,500 other entries for best picture overall.

Alex Dawson won first prize for images in the Wide Angle category for capturing this stunning whale carcass in the icy waters of East Greenland. Yury Ivanov took first place in Macro thanks to an adorable butterfly sea slug that perches on algae in Papua New Guinea. Salvatore Ianniello snapped first place winner in the Behavior category, a stunning photo of crabs riding on a barrel jellyfish in Italy. And finally, Miguel Ramirez came out on top in Compact Camera for another breathtaking behavioral shot: a tiny crayfish riding atop a large Spanish sea cucumber, filmed during a night of diving off the island of Réunion.

Contest winners announced

Together, PADI and Scuba Diving magazine have announced the winners of their 18th annual Through Your Lens photo contest, which attracted nearly 2,600 entries from around the world.

Andy Leisner, Consumer Director of PADI Worldwide, publisher of Scuba Diving magazine, said: “Submissions for the Through Your Lens photo contest 2022 have exceeded our expectations. “The images in this annual collection of underwater photography are striking, unique, and capture what a tiny fraction of the global population has a chance to experience: another 70 percent of our beautiful water-filled planets. we.”

This year’s grand prize winner is Boz Johnson, with a striking nighttime image of a fish hovering just below the surface highlighting the magic of the underwater world and the beauty worth protecting.

Through Your Lens was the first photo shoot that Johnson has ever been in, and he took home $1,000 from Scuba Diving magazine and a live ride on board the BVI Aggressor from Aggressor Adventures.

The winning images in the four contest categories are macro, wide angle, behavior and compact camera including: diving on whale carcass ice, a perch eating another perch, an open moray eel mouth to clean teeth from a blue whale, a diver exploring the shallows of a Mexican cenote on a sunny day, a whale shark at night, a mother octopus nursing her eggs it and a black and white shrimp. The first place winner for each specific category also receives a week-long Aggressor Adventures live ride, second place winner a SCUBAPRO tuner and third place winner a home accessory at underwater smartphone or SeaLife lights. Selected winners will also have the opportunity to have their photo printed on a PADI certification card.
