Scottish Open 2022 leaderboard: Cameron Tringale scores 61 points en route to record-setting day in Round 1
The first round of the Genesis Scottish Open 2022 has everything you could possibly want from the first of eight consecutive rounds of golf in Scotland. Cameron Tringale holds the lead after capturing a shocking and record-setting 61, and many of the big stars have been shaken all day by high winds and sluggish greenery.
Justin Thomas (again!) Mistakes the end of the draw, emerging as a standout storyline in Round 1, Will Zalatoris do something I’ve never seen happen on the golf course (and I doubt it either) I doubt anyone else has) and somehow – on one of the strongest courts of the year – only one player in the world’s top 10 made it to the top 14 after 18 holes.

Leader
1. Cameron Tringale (-9): More amazing than Tringale’s 61 is the fact that he hit 11 on-court hits in the process. Eleven! That hasn’t happened many times on the PGA Tour over the past few years – only twice since 2010, and it’s partly certain that Tringale has come across a heater at the right time much more easily.
Tringale made six birdies in a row to start the second nine and hit only one approach that side 17 feet away. He only needed 9 putts from 29 backstrokes to hit 61.
“I believe it’s the record here,” Tringale said. “The story of the putter. I had a slow, uncommitted start and I decided if you’re going to go out here, take a few aggressive shots. It’s en fuego. Halfway through, the stroke. mine matched mine. That’s the only way that could happen.”

Burns is the only player in the top 14 who is currently a top 10 player in the world (although only a few are outside of this group). He’s cooled down a bit since winning the Charles Schwab Challenge and nearly winning the Canadian Open next week, but he may well be the most underrated player in the world. He finished T18 here last year, and despite a good start, I want to see if he can sustain it during Friday’s cooler afternoon tee time. Burns hits a pretty high ball and I want to know if he can do it a bit in Scottish weather. If so, he could be a sleepy pick at the Open Championship.
Welcome to Scotland
The first thing I saw on Thursday when I turned on the event was Jon Rahm screams about his inability to hit the 139-yard par-3 sixth hole. He talks about alien spinning balls and nowhere to put it in that blue zone, which of course is exactly what you want to see when watching golf in Scotland.
An even weirder thing happened later in the inning when Will Zalatoris chipped a ball that ran through the hole and landed on the head of shader Matt Fitzpatrick, looking exactly like a poker chip. This is almost impossible and non-reproducible if you give every professional at the tournament 1,000 balls. Caddies were taking pictures of the incident and Zalatoris posted a photo after the round. It was a pretty “casual sports” moment.
Justin Thomas ‘bad break’
Thomas again got the bad side of the draw in Round 1. It could play out differently depending on how it plays out over the next few days, but the PGA Championship winner from the mistake of the draw played a game. wave on Thursday, 3.2 strokes harder in the afternoon than what the morning team (including Tringale) saw. Thomas hit 3 hits, which is still trivial even considering the harsher wind, but he and others in his wave like Collin Morikawa, Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick will fight a battle tough all weekend unless we see the same dichotomy on Friday.

Spieth got me curious here. He’s 2 under (albeit on an easier wave), but he hit the number of strokes in every category on Thursday and went all the way to 5 under at one point early in his round. when stopping at home. He’s always (and always seems to be) a total threat on affiliate courses, and this week will be no different as he continues to work on next week’s Open. I love him at 20-1, waiting for the weather on Friday.
