ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Scottie Scheffler He doesn’t feel pressured to be the number 1 golfer in the world, as he believes that those around the sport don’t necessarily consider him the best player on the planet.
“I guess it’s good. I guess I’m No. 1 in the rankings,” Scheffler said Wednesday in St. Andrews before The Open. “I’m not sure if I’m necessarily seen that way by all of you or anyone, but it’s not something I’ve really ever thought about. For me, I’m just trying to come out and good golf.”
When asked why he feels he’s not recognized as the world’s No. 1, Scheffler replied, “I don’t feel like there’s any more attention on me. I haven’t read much, but I’ll assume. not everyone chooses me to win week, just stuff like that.
“I don’t think I’m the favorite to be able to attend the Masters. I’m not sure if I’m the favorite to be able to participate in any tournament. That may not be the real perception. It’s just mine, but I’m not.” I don’t read much. So for me, I don’t really feel what it’s like to be number 1.”
Scheffler has been at the top of the charts since March 28, after he won Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas. He won his first major title at the Masters in April.
He was tied with the third best odds to win The Open on Wednesday morning by a score of 16-1, trailing behind Rory McIlroy (9-1) and Xander Schauffele (14-1).
Scheffler has enjoyed her time at St. Andrews and spent time navigating the actual Road Hole bunker at number 17. While he hopes to avoid that pitfall on Thursday’s outing, Scheffler said the unpredictable winds and rugged nature of the course mean he’s braced for the unexpected over four days. next.
“I think that’s one of the special things about this golf course. It’s that simple, but it’s really fun to play,” said Scheffler. “No matter the conditions, I’m going to go out there and have a good time just doing weird shoots.”
Scheffler searched through YouTube, finding clips of past champions winning at St. Andrews. He’s looking for those little tips on how they approach the course while winning the hearts of the likes Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo staring at St. Andrews after winning at Augusta.
Despite being in the elite group of players to reach the top of the golf rankings, Scheffler said he didn’t feel the heat at the 150th Open.
“I don’t feel any extra pressure on me,” Scheffler said. “I’m showing off like everyone else trying to come here and play well at a golf tournament.
“Being home to golf and the Open Championship definitely amplifies things a bit, but it’s worldwide. I think it doesn’t matter if I’m world No. 1 or world No. 50 – I want to win this tournament for better or worse than anyone out here.”
