Saweetie was criticized for implying that ‘hateful behavior’ in Rap is a new phenomenon
After Saweetie tried to make a point about the rap game, Twitter criticized her with a brand new act of acting.
It all came to light on Tuesday night when Saweetie expressed some of her thoughts on “hip hop culture” on the platform.
“Is misogyny now normal in HIP HOP culture?” she asked. “Guess so.”
now is disrespecting women normal for HIP HOP culture? guess so ♀️

Twitter accuses Saweetie of being unfamiliar with hip hop history
After Saweetie wrote this tweet, the internet had a day calling her name.
Much of the backlash focused on her, including the word “now,” which suggests that misogyny in rap has been defunct for decades.
That’s right, all the female rappers who came first talked about how they had to work harder than the men. It’s not just happening now.

How do you call yourself a “rapper” and don’t know basic rap history
– Alijah (@Drakesoldmore) November 23, 2022
Where have you been for over 20 years? How are you trying to be a rapper but have obviously never heard rap music or found out about what was going on around it?

Others have tried to call Saweetie out and admit that she has sampled tracks—like Too $hort’s “Blow The Whistle”—that might be considered inappropriate for women.
Not her “I took the sample too short” talk. Or do you think “Blow The Whistle” is about playing a wind instrument?
– natural history museum stan account (@hotpinksheets) November 23, 2022
as if she doesn’t know the background of hip hop is misogyny 😂

Saweetie sampled Too Short’s Blow The Whistle and asked if women were normal in hip hop. pic.twitter.com/00NZfrRI93

So…not trying to be rude, but don’t you guys listen to your sample “old” hiphop songs? https://t.co/AWjDNLlkqq

Some even accused her of just entering the conversation to gain attention for her new project, SINGLE LIFE.
They say her album failed because she came up with this https://t.co/cIRdEOX6MG pic.twitter.com/aLMuZmFNmL

The backlash included individuals saying that Saweetie herself contributed to and benefited from the issue.

It has always been like that and you know it. In many ways, you have benefited from it

We should note that Joan Morgan, OG’s “hip hop feminist”, who wrote When the chicken head goes home to sleepalso uploaded.
It HAS BEEN this way but through it all we have managed to create gaps and listen to it with our ears closed. The older you get, the harder it is to hear and feel. Then when you see the physical abuse ON TOP of the rest of it?? It’s really bad. If you haven’t read this- pic.twitter.com/u28Y7nny5u

Did Saweetie react to Joe Budden?
While Saweetie hasn’t said more about her tweet, we should add that it came a few hours after she apparently called out Joe Budden on Twitter.
It started when a clip surfaced of Joe hitting Saweetie shortly after she released her EP.
“I won’t listen to Saweetie until she answers the question everyone is waiting for: Did you do anything with Offset?” Joe declared. “This is not the time for your freedom…Push it back. You were silent. No need to come shake the table now. And did you f**k the guy or not? If you gon’ tell it, then tell it.
Why did Joe Budden only participate in Saweetie tho? pic.twitter.com/Pz6m7LIxSy
– Lee Lee (@Mzthanggggg) November 21, 2022
She eventually addressed his comments on Twitter.
“Saweetie needs STFU???? okay joelisha.
seeeetie need STFU???? okay joelisha 😍

Saweetie on “Violence and disrespect in male music”
Moving on from her Twitter situation, we should also add that Saweetie further commented on the rap game in a new episode of Booty Kev Podcast.
She specifically shares her belief that, due to certain messages in “male music,” female rappers are taking over.
“LA and other cities, it proves that this is why women run rap and hip hop. Because there is so much violence and disrespect in male music…
I feel like we have to raise the bar with music and come back to have a good time.
She went on to add that a lot of modern rap songs lack “empathy and love.”
What do you think of Saweetie’s comment, and do you agree with the backlash she received?
