In her first campaign for public office since 2008, former Alaska governor and one-time Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will run for Congress. .

Palin, who was catapulted to the national stage as the mate of Senator John McCain 14 years ago, has jumped into the race to claim the seat held by GOP Delegate Don Young for nearly 50 years. before he passed away last month.

“Public service is calling, and I am honored to represent Alaskan men and women in Congress, just as Congress has done for 49 years,” Palin wrote in a statement. “America was at a pivotal moment. As I watched the left side wreak havoc on the country, I knew I had to step up and join the fight.”

In his announcement, Palin criticized “out of control inflation, empty store shelves, and gas prices,” while vowing to “stand against the socialist agenda, big government, America at last. of the left.”

“I enter this race to win it and join the fight for freedom with other patriots willing to sacrifice everything to save our country,” she wrote.

It is not clear if Palin has applied to run for a full term. She just said she threw her hat in the ring for the special election prompted by Young’s death. More than 40 candidates have applied for the open special election.

Palin’s road to Parliament will be complicated. The special primaries are scheduled for June 11 – but it is open to any party. The four people with the highest number of votes will advance to the special general election on August 16. The winner of the special general election will be determined by voting of the ranked selection.

The winner will only serve for a few months, the rest of Young’s term.

Palin, who helped usher in a new brand of GOP politics more than a decade ago, had previously flirted with Washington back.

In 2016, NBC News reported that she had expressed interest in and contacted Trump transition officials about a potential role with the administration.

More recently, she was in the news for her defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. So far, she has lost two court battles.

While in New York for court proceedings, Palin was fired for returning to a restaurant in the city two days after she tested positive for Covid-19. She was seen dining in the house even though she was not vaccinated against the virus.
