Sanderson Farms Championship 2022 leaderboard, scores: Davis Riley, Will Gordon share the lead after Round 1
The PGA Tour returns from a great Presidential Cup with a fun Sanderson Farm Championship to kick off the rest of last fall as we know it for the foreseeable future. The tournament in Jackson, Mississippi, became an exciting front in the fall – the kind of backup PGA Tour event that doesn’t really define the Tour anymore but provides a great launch pad for young talent and a berth. good parking for old strikers.
Sam Burns, new to his first Team America event, became the defending champion and he played brilliantly on his first day at the Country Club of Jackson. Still, he overtook the leads – and there were plenty of them – after 18 holes.
Let’s take a look back at his round as well as everyone else’s in this week’s hunt.
Leaders
T1. Davis Riley, Will Gordon (-6)
Riley is someone who has been talked about as a potential future Pres President Cup candidate or even a participant in the Ryder Cup, and perhaps this is the start of the march to Rome next year. That may sound ridiculous given the depth of the US, but Riley is an amazing talent, and we often see 3-5 players drop out each year on these US teams.
“I felt like I played really solid,” said Riley. “I find it very hard to get really, really close to so many pins just because the trees are rolling out, the wind is up there. It’s hard to get a lot of opportunities, but yeah, I feel like I’ve made it. Really Great day. The way I play, I feel like if I keep going, I’ll get pretty close to it. Keeping it stress-free is really cool.”
One thing to note is that although Riley hit very well, he also put in a very hot putter in the 1st half (5th on the field) with a 6 under. He has successful serves to assist it, but that’s worth looking at as we head into the next three innings.
Other candidates
T3. Andrew Putnam, Brandon Matthews, Kevin Yu, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Mark Hubbard, Thomas Detry, Trevor Cone (-5)
T10. Nick Taylor, Kevin Roy, Russell Knox, SH Kim (-4)
Keep an eye on Matthews. He got married on Saturday and joked that his wife has always dreamed of honeymooning in Jackson. He’s one of the longest good players in the world at tee, and he hit nearly three strokes from tee to green Thursday. This week’s winning Matthews will be a great story.
“I consider myself one of the luckiest guys in the world to be able to do this job for a living because I love it,” says Matthews. “For the fun of the next three days, don’t pressure yourself and go out and enjoy it.”
Burns back
A three-time winner a year ago, Burns is easily the class of this court, and he played well enough with a 2 under 70 on Thursday to be in the top three on odds (see below) . The good news for Burns a week after he hit a series of long putts to help America win at Quail Hollow is that he hasn’t played well at all and has plenty of room for improvement (and perhaps a win). second in a row here) in the next three days.

Riley is the winner but not necessarily in this number. On the other hand, Bezuidenhout is an interesting pick as he is close to winning a successful Presidents Cup and leading the field from tee to Green Thursday. Burns is also a nice number, based on his firepower and how poorly he falls (105th on the pitch) on Thursday. Those are the two that I would put ahead of Riley.
