San Francisco EV Owners Mining Crypto Using Free Electricity – Raised on That?

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Personality on Youtube Siraj Raval converted his Tesla EV into a mining rig, allowing him to use a free chargeback agreement to mine cryptocurrency.

  • Tesla owners spoke to CNBC about how they used the car’s internal computer and battery power to mine cryptocurrency.
  • San Francisco-based Siraj Raval mines ethereum by connecting graphics processing units directly to Tesla car batteries.

Siraj Raval tried everything to mine cryptocurrency from his 2018 Tesla Model 3.

He runs freely bitcoin mining software on his Apple Mac mini M1 and powering the computer by plugging an inverter into a 12-volt electrical outlet located in his car’s center console.

He also hooks up interconnected graphics processing units or GPUs to the “frunk” of his Tesla, which runs these machines on the car’s internal batteries.

While it risks voiding his car’s warranty, Raval says it’s worth it.

When the price of ether peaked in 2021, he claimed he was making $800 a month.

Profitable but complex value?

Whether or not Tesla’s crypto mining proves profitable depends a lot on when drivers buy their cars.

For example, Allesi purchased his car before January 2017, which means he was included in a program where he could get free and unlimited supercharging for the entire life of his car. me.

In 2018, he estimates that in a 60-hour period he will make $10 in bitcoin, all profitable, since he doesn’t have to pay for power.

But even though it’s profitable, it’s not worth much, he said.

Obviously this is just a stunt. Making a few hundred dollars doesn’t make up for the price of a Tesla.

But an “EV” doesn’t have to be a shiny new Tesla to qualify for charging point access. An EV put together using parts recovered from the wreck or a set of deep-discharge hydraulic batteries of dubious origin on a trailer would work just as well.

As green energy policies drive electricity costs higher in California, as electricity bills become increasingly unsustainable, it takes an hour to draw several tens of KWh of electricity from an EV fast-charging point. subsidies, then taking the electricity home and using it to power a decent night’s worth of affordable home heating or whatever, could become an increasingly attractive proposition.

Note: RE image, Siraj is mining Ether, Not Bitcoin – but you can remember the symbol for Ethereum without looking it up? I can not.

Note 2: I wouldn’t recommend anyone trying to do any of this – 50KW fast charging through a faulty amateur charging circuit would be quite spectacular and quite dangerous for anyone around.
