San Diego Padres releases City Connect uniform

The San Diego Padres ‘The partnership with Nike on City Connect uniforms began about 18 months ago and has gone through a number of different paths. Most of them represent safer, more conventional options, says Padres CEO Erik Greupner.

In the end, however, they were bold.

Padres created a national theme that pays homage to the popular Hispanic culture in a city close to the shared border between Mexico and the United States. They feature pink, mint and gold, vibrant colors seen throughout the Baja peninsula, on uniforms that pay homage to a region with a unique social dynamic.

“I think this is going to be really well received by a young and diverse fan base,” Greupner told ESPN in a phone conversation. “We really see this as an opportunity to connect in a deeper and more meaningful way with our young and diverse fans.”

The Padres announced their City Connect uniforms on Friday, making them available through Nike’s website, Major League Baseball’s online store and the Padres team’s store in Petco Park. The players will wear them for the first time on July 8, at home against opponents of the same class San Francisco Giantsand for home matches the following Friday.

Padres is the seventh and final team to launch a City Connect device this season, following Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Angel of Los Angeles, Milwaukee Brewers and Citizens of Washingtoneach of them tried to capture the vibes of their surroundings through a style different from their traditional uniforms.

It is estimated that somewhere in the area 100,000 people commute each day between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico’s populous border city, taking buses, trolleys and cars to live and work. The result is a culture shared between Hispanics and Americans that can be rivaled only by Miami’s close ties to the Caribbean. The Padres tried to honor that with three colors that, according to the team’s announcement, “combine the iconic image of California with the vibrant colors of the Baja peninsula.”

Yellow forms the collar, sleeve hemline and name outline on the front, written in a font intended to depict weathered beach signs. Pink highlights on the right sleeve, numbers and belt. Mint makes up the left sleeve and cap.

The Padres, dormant for most of their more than 50-year existence, have undergone a major transformation in recent years. They invested a total of $444 million in Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado in back-to-back missions, traded to established starters such as Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Mike Clevinger, Joe Musgrove and Sean Manaeainvested in a starry farm system due to Fernando Tatis Jr. and watched their popularity skyrocket in a city reeling from the departure of the NFL team.

The Padres averaged 36,551 fans at Petco Park this season, the fourth most in the majors, and experienced the biggest attendance growth in the industry since 2019, barely surpassing Atlanta Braves The team won the World Series last year. They hope these uniforms will be another step towards connecting with a community that has rallied the local baseball team since Charger move to LA

The players, at least, are on board.

The team did a photo session with their City Connect uniforms during spring training, and Greupner immediately noticed a surge of energy through it.

He said: “It was such a thrill to put on those things. That’s not why we chose them, but if you look at some of the highlights that Major League Baseball players, especially on the Padres have worn their uniforms over the past few years – it’s belting. gold back, gold bars, it’s pink, lots of pink, it’s this mint green. And so we created a uniform that reflects a variety of colors that are so significant in Hispanic culture, and as a result, unsurprisingly, very meaningful in San Diego. “
