Sam Eggington could be set up for Dennis Hogan clash under
Sam Eggington looks set to defend his title later this year – but it won’t come to England.
The Stourbridge man, who gained weight after winning the British, Commonwealth and European titles in the welterweight division, holds the IBO crown in the superweight category.
Eggington defeats Przemyslaw Zysk at the Skydome Arena in Coventry in June to claim an empty present and is said to have agreed to travel to Australia to meet his obligatory challenger Dennis Hogan.
A date to be confirmed in October in Brisbane are the details rumored for the clash so far.
And Steve Scanlan, Hogan’s new manager, thinks his responsibility doesn’t deserve another shot at a relatively large time.
Speaking to Australians, Scanlan said:
“Dennis deserves this shot because of everything he’s been through.
“He was a three-time world champion and he was robbed in Mexico, but this will be his first world title fight on Australian soil.”
The ‘robbery’ Scanlan was referring to was the decisive April 2019 loss at the hands of hometown man Jaime Munguia, the undefeated Mexican, who held the WBO superweight title now belonging to Jermell Charlo, his older brother. Jermall Hogan was also defeated by in his next fight.
“The IBO has asked us to negotiate and we have one more week to finalize the deal with Sam Eggington before it comes to a bid.
“Negotiations are going well, they are happy to come here, so we expect a deal to be done this week, which is great news for Dennis and the fans of his game. Australia.”
‘The Hurricane’ took the title by beating the intrepid Wade Ryan to the underdog in Nikita Tszyu’s debut win at Fortitude Valley Music Hall in Brisbane in March.
Scanlan is confident that the former DDP Sports boxer will soon find a new home for the strap.
“Eggington is easy to beat.”
“Sam has more strength than Dennis, but Dennis has the experience to surpass him as the fight progresses.
“What happened to Dennis in Mexico was devastating, but in his backyard he could finally get that world title.
“This is his last chance.”
