Rudy Giuliani’s Promising Law Career Cut Short by New York Disbarment Order

From appearing in a Borat movie with hands in pants faces criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia and Arizona, Rudy Giuliani has endured many difficult days in his 80 years on Earth. What is today’s kick in the ass? Losing his law license in the state where he once served not only as mayor but also as one of the most powerful prosecutors.

Yes, Giuliani was officially—and permanently—disbarred in New York on Tuesday for his work as personal and campaign attorney for Donald Trump, in which the former mayor and former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York told all sorts of lies to keep Trump in power. A New York State appeals court wrote that those lies were “designed to create distrust in our country’s electoral system in the minds of the people and destroy their faith in the legitimacy of our government.”

The court added that “the gravity of defendant’s misconduct cannot be overstated,” noting that Giuliani “grossly abused his prominent position as personal attorney to former President Trump and his campaign” and “baselessly attacked and undermined the integrity of this country’s electoral process.” In doing so, the court said, the former mayor “not only willfully violated some of the most basic principles of the legal profession, but also actively contributed to the national conflict that followed the 2020 presidential election, for which he shows absolutely no remorse.”

Giuliani’s New York law license was initially suspended in 2021; in May, the board that oversees disciplinary recommendations for lawyers admitted to the Washington, DC, bar said he should no longer be allowed to practice law there. In response to losing his New York law license, Barry Kamins, a lawyer for Giuliani, said New York Times: “Mr. Giuliani is clearly disappointed in this decision. We are considering our appeal options.”

Last December, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy after being ordered to pay nearly $150 million in damages to two Georgia election officials he had defamed. Creditors have suggested in court filings that he may be hiding assets; despite agreeing to a $43,000-a-month budget, he reportedly spent nearly three times that amount in January.
