Rivian The founder of RJ Scaringe last week provided an update on electric truck manufacturer’s production plan – describes development at the plant in Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, and sets out the audacious goal of capturing 10% electric vehicle market share by 2030. But while he’s drawing broad outlines of the future, the dwarves running the product configurator on Rivian’s website are showcasing the big changes here and now. Rivian just unveiled its dual-engine entry-level powertrain, so that’s good news. But meanwhile, the price for Set up four existing engines has just been raised by $12,000.
The R1T Pickup Dual Engine Discovery package, with Standard the battery packed, starting at $67,500. That price does not include destination fees, which are not defined on Rivian’s configurator. The Standard battery pack is new and offers a lower range, about 260 miles per charge. Rivian does not specify the size of the Standard package.
Stepping up to the Adventure pack with the same motor and same battery pack will cost you $73,000. It has a nicer interior with ventilated seats and ash wood, plus some conveniences like drag hook.
The dual-motor setup delivers over 600 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, with a 0 to 60 time in about 4 seconds – so it’s still very fast vans. And it’s still all-wheel drive, with one motor on each front and rear axle, but it obviously won’t have some of the capabilities of the quad at-the-wheel and its tricks. party, like a flashy tank.
Upgrading to four engines on either of those trims raises the price to $6,000, and the Big battery pack with a 314-mile range is another $6,000. This brings out 835 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque, with a zero-to-60 transit time of 3 seconds. So far, this is the only configuration on offer – with a base price of $67,500. So the apples, the same truck are now $12,000 more.
And if you want the optional Max Pack battery with more than 400 miles of range, it comes out after a year or so and is only available on truck R1T. It will cost $16,000.
The R1S Meanwhile, the still-yet-unproduced sport utility vehicle starts at $72,500 for the Explore version and $78,000 for the Adventure version. That’s with the dual-motor setup and standard battery pack. Upgrading to the quad engine and big package is again $6,000 each, bringing the price to $84,500 in the Explore version. Previously, the base price of that setup was $70,000. So the SUV is getting a $14,500 boost, boldly, before it hits the road.
The four-engine engines that Rivian uses today are made by Bosch, but release reports that the dual motors will be produced in-house by Rivian, which even intends to build its own battery cells. In addition to the Illinois plant, which is capable of producing 200,000 vehicles per year, Rivian is adding a plant in Georgia by 2024 with a capacity of 400,000 units and a battery plant nearby.
