Hi, I’m Stephanie Redman, a professional motocross coach of 10+ years who specializes in working with younger riders. I have worked with many juniors over the years including Harry Khouri, Harrison Voight, Jacob Roulstone, Luke Power and of course Senna Agius.

I have worked continuously with Senna for the past four years, and midway through the 2021 season, I decided to switch full-time with the Agius family to help him reach his full potential.

Welcome to the first part of what I hope you will find pieces of information in a series of regular contributions to MCNews.com.au.

While I will cover different topics of the year, this first part will cover the most recent race weekend with Senna where he competed in the second round of the FIM JuniorGP European Championship Moto2 2022 in Valencia, a tournament known in previous years as the FIM CEV Repsol Moto2 European Championship.

Going into any weekend we know it’s never going to be easy, the FIM JuniorGP European Moto2 Championship is producing world-class riders year after year, however before that they do. I tested at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia and left with a good setup and a happy, confident Senna jumping in times as low as 1:36.

Senna is one of the new Triumph engines introduced for 2022, as are Lukas Tulovic, Alex Escrig and many others, but not all. So while we know Senna’s test times are competitive based on the JuniorGP’s 2021 season (Honda engine), we can only assume that a modern Triumph engine will deliver lap times. lower.

With a masterclass from Tulovic two weekends before at Estoril let Senna in P2 ride a race of his own, we don’t know what will happen when it comes to Valencia. Moto2 is still very new to Senna and every lap, session and lap he learns something new and keeps improving.

In Thursday practice sessions he worked hard and finished the day in a good place, finished similar to the test and for sure he could improve further and do 35 on the day after.

Friday is when nerves come in. This is the first official timing exercise of the weekend, and we can see where our hard work has positioned us relative to others and how much more time we need to find. For a young rider (or any), having a good first session is crucial as it can set the tone for the weekend.

Senna goes out and hasn’t even completed a lap being dragged back into the pit. He had a small technical problem that caused the bike to handle quite differently, so instead of taking the risk, he decided to pull over.

It took us 26 minutes while the Promotion Team couldn’t ignore it to find the error. During this time as they worked on the bike, we found that Héctor Garzo went the fastest and put in the first 1:35 of the session. When a problem like this happens, it can happen one of two ways, but instead of getting stressed, Senna stays calm and focused on the job at hand.

He rolled out of the hole and his first lap was within two tenths of his personal best, the next lap being quicker. This is a testament to the Promo team, the quality of the work and the ability to instill confidence in the driver. Then he did better than this again, posting a time of 1:35,729 to put him P2 behind Escrig, with hot Garzo and Tulovic in his back.

The track temperature in the afternoon was much hotter than in the morning, resulting in very different levels of grip. This means that the bike’s setup and riding style need to be altered slightly to accommodate. We went through a bit of this in Estoril but haven’t fully understood how much of an impact this has on Valencia so far this session.

The things he was able to do on the bike before now needed to change. He adapted well throughout the session and managed P2 again, down 0.2 seconds from his previous session time. These hot afternoons are important as these conditions will best match what we can expect for Sunday’s race.

While we were pleased with his lap pace, the stability on the new tires in hot conditions was not as good as local Spaniard, Escrig, and we need to continue to improve.

Saturday morning’s elimination session was cooler once again, and it would be optimal for doing a quick lap. Going into the game with confidence, Senna felt she could improve on the days before 1:35.7 and knew what she had to do. He’s put the banker’s lap at 1:35.639 on the old tire and is ready to improve when the new tire goes live.

Senna took a 1:35,345 lead early in the game but with a mix of traffic and red flags, he failed to improve. Once the matter was settled, he ran outside with three more laps to run, trying to close the gap with Tulovic and Escrig. Both achieved phenomenal laps during Simone Corsi’s Moto2 peak time of 1:34,956 from MotoGP 2021. He threw everything at it but in the end it was either slow traffic or cycling. Speeding and making small mistakes. He ended the session with third place on the grid, to which we were eliminated.

In the second qualifying round, he had a chance to improve his time, but that was unlikely due to hotter track conditions, so the main focus was on preparing well for the 19 lap race. The bike continued to get better as Senna rode and out of the top three, he was the only rider who could come close to his lap time from Q1.

We’re confident in his ability to perform on old and new tires in the heat, but with Escrig’s two-day stability we believe he’ll be the man to beat. .

We went into Sunday confident for a podium and hoping for a win. In Estoril, the weakest part of our race was the start, the part that Senna and the team dialed in all weekend. With improved confidence at the start and a powerful package for the race, we’re excited to see what Senna can do. Unfortunately, from here on the rest is history.

Senna got off to a great start, sliding to third place in the first inning with Escrig hitting the hole from second on the net. It seems Tulovic also knows Escrig’s pace and worries about him going up front, making an inward pass to move into the second.

This pushed Escrig out a bit and Senna was able to take advantage, following Tulovic for second place. Walking behind Tulovic, he quickly realized that he had quite good speed. Senna decided he was going to take the lead and tried to run his own pace in the front, lining up a nice move on turn three and making it through the inner ring on turn four.

Immediately he started to close the gap to second place, but unfortunately he couldn’t tell this. He kept pushing until the top of the car let go 12 turns.

Going out of the top is never ideal, but we learn. ” – Senna Agius spoke on social media after reflecting on what could be his first win in the FIM JuniorGP Moto2 European Championship.

And learn we will do. The track temperature for the race was the hottest he drove all weekend; The crash is the result of pushing slightly too much for the available grip. To consider this, the difference between the previous lap he passed safely and the crash, was slightly less braking and an extra 1 km/h speed increase in the middle of the turn. No one was more disappointed than Senna himself, but while he applauded his team-mate as he received the third-place trophy from none other than Pedro Acosta himself, he told me, “I guess it’s like Pedro running out of the lead at Le Mans.” Just an inexperienced rookie caught out.

Overall, I was impressed with his performance and maturity. We will absorb everything we have learned this weekend and continue to grow and fight again at the next round in Barcelona on 11order & twelfthorder Of June.
