Review American Motors headquarters before joining AMC into oblivion

The major headquarters of American Motors Corp. in Detroit there’s a dating with wrecked ball. The 1927 historic structure with an ornate tower and a fine façade is expected to be the leveling this year in favor of a new industrial site.

You may be surprised to learn that Former headquarters of American Motors still stands, given that the company itself ceased to exist 34 years ago. Just looking at it, you’d assume this is yet another automotive history milestone left to decay and is currently set for demo. That’s not exactly the case.

It was originally a refrigerator factory, in front of it was a stately office building, that’s what you see. stand out in the pictures. Much of the 2 million square meter property is old industrial space in the back. AMC only used it as its headquarters from the 1950s to the 1970s before transferring it to another location in the suburbs. The site has links to Arsenal of Democracy, as the forerunner of AMC Nash-Kelvinator built helicopters there at the end of World War II. In a minute, when George Romney and the others were AMC rolling, it’s a hotbed of community activism, as many longtime residents have noted. Chrysler inherit the structure when purchasing an AMC and then using it as a technical basis. Chrysler sold the location during its 2009 bankruptcy, and it’s been vacant since 2010.

I remember driving to this location in the early 2000s after taking a wrong turn. I couldn’t believe this majestic building seemed to appear out of nowhere in a western neighborhood. My father, a native diver, explained how important it is to me, and that’s about it. This was before Chrysler went bust, and the place is actually still in operation. In later years, I would pass by, and it was clearly an eyesore. Detroit has one of the nation’s most profound collections of industrial landmarks, some of which are still in use, some of which are notoriously derelict, like Packard Factory. AMC’s headquarters is in the latter category. It was more of curiosity than anything else.

Does it have a fair amount of history? Sure. Certainly in an ideal world the office structure would be preserved. Unfortunately, it was allowed to languish in the post-Chrysler 2010s. But rating it makes sense, in the name of Detroit’s continued rebirth and to make better use of prime real estate. The city says the $66 million development will create 300 permanent jobs. The developers are paying the city $5.9 million for the site, so it’s no wonder the city cleans up the whitewash and generates substantial revenue.

If there is a way to safely save part of the tower or facade, that would be very helpful. Perhaps this structure was an appropriate metaphor for AMC – which flourished for a short time – but disappeared after a period of oblivion.

Other news and notes:

Buick will definitely brush off ‘Electra’. Synthetic engine moved to brand name Electraused on a intersection concept at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show and in cars in the US from 1959-1990. To be clear: Electra is arguably the best name for a tramand it has a natural resonance with Buick buyer. For the younger “Is it a Buick?” crowd, it simply sounds good.

Your car is dirtier than the toilet. So say a Studied from Aston University (good name) in the UK, found that there was more bacteria in the trunk and on the driver’s seat, gearshift and dashboard than in regular toilet seats. That’s pretty gross, but marks this as one of many studies that highlight how fragile the world is. You probably remember the studies that said phone receivers were dirtier than toilet seats. The study found a correlation between the age of the vehicle and the number of bacteria, which makes perfect sense. Much of this is also due to how often people eat in their cars and the groceries they bring home. There’s also a good chance that you clean your bathroom regularly, but only clean your car When it looks dirty, the Aston researchers note. It’s scientific.

Tesla Cybertruck is delayed again. Tesla said last week it won’t launch any new model lines in 2022, including Cybertruck, Roadster and Semi (remember Semi?). That means it will be 2023 at the earliest before what is much expected vans to what would be a crowded market. When the Cybertruck was announced in 2019 complete with a broken window, the world was a lot different. Hummer electric truck, Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T All are in production now. The Chevy Silverado launches in 2023. (Though it’s just working truck and $105,000-First Edition. The consumer Silverado EV doesn’t arrive until 2024.) That’s been a long time for Tesla. Cybertruck was supposed to remake the segment – now it’s merely joining it. That said, Tesla will sell every Cybertruck it can make. With its angular stainless steel body and quirky bed design, it will still land on impact. In the light of uncertainty about lack of chips and the pandemic, it’s interesting to see Tesla taking a cautious and focused approach to its core models before expanding.

Unique Ford Bronco raises $500,000 for Detroit charity. You may have noticed First version Ford Bronco Pope Francis Center 2021 last week and was a bit thrown by its name. The Bronco not a tribute to the Pope. Rather, the proceeds benefit a homeless shelter called the Pope Francis Center. What you may not know is Ford CEO Jim Farley volunteers thereas if Detroit Free Press report. Another sponsor matched Bronco’s sale price, so the center, which serves 200 people a day and is a few blocks away GMdowntown’s world headquarters, will get 1 million dollars. Wimbleton White Bronco with red highlights on sale at Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., one of the vehicles raised $8.8 million for charities (led by $3.6 million) Escort ship Z06 VIN No. 001). In another nod to Motor City, the Bronco’s retro wheels are derived from Detroit Steel Wheels.

The Throwback Michigan panels are back: Admittedly this is a heavy column in Michigan, but people seem to like it license plates. The black and gold sign is inverted with the slogan “Water-Winter-Winterland” has returned and now on the way. They were originally released in 1965 and follows a similar plate first used in 1954. I love old sports uniforms and I will be getting one of these when my innovation starts again.
