Hi, I’m Tommy Refenes. You may remember me from games like Super Meat Boy and Super Meat Boy Forever. I’m happy to be able to tell you that the Meat Boy universe is coming back to PlayStation later this year in the form of a brand new title called Doctor Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine!
Meat Boy has had enough games (for now). Now is the time for Dr. Fetus to become a star. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine takes place right after the events of Super Meat Boy Forever (right after the epilogue, before the post-production scene). Dr. Fetus wants to make clones of Meat Boy and he needs to remove all clones from the genetic pool to get purebred, perfect and killable Meat Boys. I wonder what Dr. Fetus will do with the never-ending supply of Meat Boys…hmmm…perhaps a question for another time.
Hacksaws, lasers, rockets and other hazards
What this means in practice is a Puyo Puyo style four-match puzzle game with a unique twist of difficulty, thanks to the devious games of the nefarious Dr. Fetus. As you’re trying to get your color-coded clones to the bottom of the screen and create combos, you’ll have to deal with hacksaws, rockets, and a host of other dangers poised to destroy the clones. yours if you don’t play along. precision that the Super Meat Boy series has always demanded. In other words, what we’re doing with Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is taking the tough challenge Meat Boy is known for to create a unique blend of puzzle gameplay and action.
The roots of this game lie in the longstanding relationship between Team Meat and our friends at Headup. We’ve worked together for almost 12 years in a variety of roles and we love them. So when they approached us with the idea of a four-player matching puzzle game, we were pretty busy launching Super Meat Boy Forever but then we looked at the pitch and their archetype and again love them all. We’ve combined their design and programming skills – mainly Niko Panagiotopoulos and Mark Aldrup – with our art and design skills, and now we have a beautiful puzzle game and this fun that we never even thought of creating without their amazing prototype and the desire to create something new and amazing.
It’s time to enjoy death again
The game features over 100 handcrafted levels filled with dangers and traps that will test your puzzle mind along with your finger reflexes. This is a game in the Meat Boy Universe, so wait to die – over and over again. In the end, when you’ve died enough, your skills will become second nature and you’ll start passing levels with no more effort than taking a simple breath. You will feel fulfilled. You will feel…complete. At that point, you will have to fight a boss that will kill you time and time again. You will know death. It’s a lot of fun and pretty cute too!
If you’ve been a fan of Meat Boy, then first, thank you and second, there’s a lot in Dr. Fetus’ Medium Meat Machine that will please you. We have lots of familiar Super Meat Boy and Super Meat Boy Forever locations such as the Picturesque Forest, the Hospital and the Salt Factory, all with vibrant backgrounds, animations and cutscenes created by the Original artist of Super Meat Boy Forever created. We also have a great soundtrack created by the talented Ridiculon.
It was fun to see Meat Boy go in a new direction with the collaboration of a team that showed us the possibilities of the series we never thought of. The result is a game that exists in a familiar genre, but at the same time is unlike any other game in that genre. Super Meat Boy’s move to inject tough meaty DNA into a four-player matching puzzle game is a move that I think few of you would have expected (hey, we didn’t expect it when Headup buys us the first idea!). But believe me, it’s a crazy enough idea to work on, and I can’t wait for you all to try and survive Dr Fetus’ twisting lab when the game launches for PlayStation. 5 and PlayStation 4 later this year.
