Resident Evil 7’s free PS5 upgrade puts PS Plus Collection owners off

So keep that disc if you still have it

Resident Evil fans have a reason to visit again some of the recent hits of the series this week like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3and Resident Evil 7 all have PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions (and PC updates are required). Owners of these games on PS4 and Xbox One can upgrade for free with benefits like faster load times, ray tracing, and even haptic feedback with the DualSense controller. Except, there is one unfortunate incident – if you own Resident Evil 7 through the PlayStation Plus Collection you won’t get the PS5 upgrade, which is also kind of a weird warning Final Fantasy fan spent with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Some of you pointed this out earlier this week, and it was certainly an unfortunate mistake.

I think I bought RE7 digitally, but it turns out I initially got a disc-based copy at launch, then bought all the DLC and afterward redeemed the PS Plus Collection version when I received my PS5. if you see a small yellow plus icon (pictured above), it’s a dead gift.

PlayStation Plus Collection is a great privilege for PlayStation 5 owners and when the console first came out and there weren’t many honest to good PS5 games to play, it took some heavy lifting. Having one of the collection’s signature PS4 games get a new PS5 version, but then restricting who can participate, feels unnecessary. It’s just poor optics.

If you want to upgrade RE7 to the PS5 version, you’ll currently need to buy a digital copy of PS4 (it’s $20) or grab a disc. That’s what I ended up with and this is what it looks like:

Upgrade your disc-based PS4 copy Resident Evil 7 to the PS5 version.

With the disc in my PS5, I clicked on the banner on the right that said “Free PS5 Upgrade” and it got me where I needed to go. However, you may have to dig some.

How to find upgrades in the PlayStation Store

Even if you own a PS4 copy of Resident Evil 7 for which you have already paid for it outright, it may not be necessary to upgrade to the PS5 version depending on which version you have – for example, if you have Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition. You may have a hard time finding what you’re looking for on the browser-based PlayStation Store, especially when it comes to the individual PS5 versions of the DLC (like Bedroom, Nightmareand 21), so I’d recommend confirming everything directly on the console if possible. When in doubt, click the little “…” button on the game’s store page to switch to the appropriate product version.

I didn’t spend much time with RE7 on PS5 – enough to get many (but not all!) of my old titles back on – but I’ve seen less than ideal conversations about RE2 and RE3. As good as ray tracing is in theory, inconsistent frame rates can be a deal breaker. I’m not sure if these versions will be updated further, but it looks like they need a bit more work.

I also hope Capcom and Sony figure out whatever they need to get around this. In an ideal world, these upgrades would be easy for users. Xbox has done a great job with Smart delivery and backward compatibility improvements.
