You’ve released a number of singles over the years, including 2016’s “Brutally” and 2019’s “Best Place in the World” Why do you feel this is the right time for a full album ?
I’ve only released singles before, like once a year. And it’s great because it’s so do-it-yourself, I just put a song on YouTube and make a video with my friend. It’s great because the people who wanted to find it, found it. My singles have always been done this DIY way and that’s how I approach the album. I put some savings aside and I got the best producer I thought I could and actually did a completely independent recording. I never even thought that being signed to a label would be an option and I certainly never want to. [releasing this album] like, Oh, I’m a pop star now. I never wanted to push my music down people’s throats. So it’s a slow build.
Release your debut album I can’t let go must feel like a big step into the limelight for you, the music savvy. What were some of the emotions you were dealing with when you launched it?
My self-image seems to be very related to how I feel when I release my music and I think that’s why I felt like there was a negative voice in my head for a long time. . It is said, “you are not allowed to do this or present yourself in this way because there is already a story that people have for you.” And that can feel very difficult.
