Rascal Cat helps launch another college program

William McGuire is expanding the breeding program at Cazenovia College near Syracuse, NY, with the same stallions that helped him establish the Thoroughbred breeding program at Arkansas State University.

Rascal Cat Pulpit’s 17-year-old son has been transferred to New York, where he will train students in the handling of stallions and will be made available to outside breeders for a fee of $1,000.

“He had the perfect stallion temperament to help train college students,” says McGuire. “While he is certainly a stallion, his demeanor lessens the risk for students who are just learning how to handle stallions during live breeding.”

McGuire began a breeding program in the State of Arkansas in 2017 and brought back the Rascal Cat from Oklahoma. The stallion was a coveted standout, sold for $1.3 million to Stonestreet Stables in a Taylor Made Sales Agency shipment at the 2006 Keeneland Sale September. He was not is the winning mare Storm Cat, Razzi Cat and a half-brother to group 1 winners Rocking Trick and Randy Cat. His family is wealthy and successful in Europe, with 35 equity winners named under his third dam, Vale.

As a racehorse, Rascal Cat was thwarted by a tubular fracture but he won 11 races and trailed 20 others out of 68 starts and earned $203,124. He has little chance as a steed without a deposit to claim his credit. His six crops are represented by 33 ponies, including 19 starters and seven winners. His best runner to date is Rascal Candy, who is a five-time champion and has reached another 12 of the 27 that started on his way to more than $50,000.

“He had a good profile and picked the winners from a limited number of children,” said McGuire. “As far as what he’s going to add to the New York breeding program, I feel that he brings great bloodlines for a very affordable fee to the owner.”

The only thoroughbred mares Cazenovia owns are now used for stallion training classes, so McGuire said the school is looking for mares to donate to the breeding program. The foals resulting from the program will be used for weaning and appetite management classes and will eventually be prepared for sale.

The school has another stallion, a Holsteiner named Royal Appearance, which was used for artificial insemination training and bred as a stallion.

McGuire began his studies at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas, where he taught animal science, anatomy, and physiology classes, and implemented the university’s equine program. He also started the college rodeo team, the equestrian team, and coached the equestrian team. After 15 years in this position, he accepted a job at the State University of New Mexico and worked as a New Mexico Northern Equestrian Specialist among other roles. Next, he went to Arkansas State and then took the job in 2019 as an assistant manager at Sequel Stallion New York. He became a visiting lecturer at Cazenovia College in August 2021.
