Ranji Trophy Quarterfinals, Day 1: Bengal take the lead against Jharkhand

It would have been nice to lose to Bengal, who rode up to Sudip Kumar Gharami’s 100th maiden First Place to end the first day with a 310-to-1 difference across the board in Ranji Trophy’s first quarter-final at Just Cricket Academy Ground on Monday.

Jharkhand’s frustration was compounded by the scene in which Shahbaz Nadeem threw his hat to the ground in disgust after hitting the wrong spot in the cover in the middle of a fruitless match late in the day. A few incidents later, Gharami stepped out from Nadeem’s filming partner Anukul Roy to enter the nineties with a score of more than four before marking his century.

23 years old and averaging just over 14 in 4 First Division matches prior to today, Gharami is unaffected by major milestones. In third place, Gharami took the lead after seven polka dots. Once settled, he tossed Nadeem through a long six to 48 before playing a deft inside-out drive through Roy’s covers.

Gharami and Anustup Majumdar on foot against spin stood out as the duo hit 178 second-match runs, with Nadeem and Roy bowling in tandem for much of the partnership. After 43 unsuccessful messes, Saurabh Tiwary won a new ball. What followed was a series of boundaries as Bengal accumulated 46 runs in the last nine rounds. Majumdar pulled Sushant Mishra to three identical boundaries in the 87th match to defeat Bengal’s power over the game.

Prior to that, openers Abhishek Raman and Abhimanyu Easwaran laid the groundwork with 88 uninterrupted runs before the retired former got injured on the 41st. Raman drove a Rahul Shukla half volley to long-term boundaries before hand to the four delivery people outside off in the first time. That opening summarizes the struggles of Jharkhand’s pacers, who failed to exploit the recommended swing in the first hour by bowling too wide, too far, or going too short.

After several early innings and three consecutive possession of the ball with his feet before Ashish Kumar cushioned the ball inside, captain Easwaran – trying to escape his grimace to nullify the spin – found his stride with four goals at long range. With six hitters inactive, the speed controllers throw the ball too straight, giving the volleyball players free rein.

The openers were particularly severe in the V, punishing any careless behavior across the length of the ground. Easwaran also showed off his range, edging past the third man with six and cutting a hind foot for four after the keeper was brought to the stump to keep the captain from stepping out of rhythm. .

With Easwaran easily picking the lane and the length of his fast pitchers, Jharkhand got his first lifesteal in play. Easwaran was stuck in front by Mishra while the former tried to play the ball at length from the corner.

However, Majumdar, coming next, dashed any hope of Jharkhand’s recovery. An outlier from the penultimate first slip of the day is the only glimmer of hope for pitchers in a near-perfect exhibition of batting.
