‘Punt God’ Matt Araiza prepares to start for Bills after veteran is cut

Putting the “Punt God” moniker aside, Buffalo Bills rookie Matt Araiza understands that he has much to improve on even after Buffalo cleared the way for the player to make the season opener.

“I wouldn’t call it a relief, because you have to go out to work every week,” Araiza said Monday. “It’s a step in the right direction, and I’m certainly grateful for that.”

Araiza’s place on the list is all but guaranteed after the Bills release veterans back Matt Haack in a series of roster cuts after a 42-15 pre-season win Denver on Saturday.

The decision to cut Haack is the most notable move in settling a spot that has been taken since Buffalo used a sixth-round pick to drag 21-year-old Araiza with an explosive left foot. State of San Diego.

The move comes after Araiza attempted just one ball in two pre-season games. His hit was impressive enough: one player turned the field for 82 yards, dribbling into the final area in a 27-24 win Indianapolis in Buffalo’s pre-season opener on August 13.

“I just feel like it’s time to move on with a camp ball player,” coach Sean McDermott said, noting that it gives Haack a chance to catch up with another team before the regular season. Opening.

“What we’ve seen so far with Matt Araiza, he’s off to a good start,” added McDermott. “That doesn’t mean he’s where he needs to be. He’s not. And speaking to Matt this morning, he echoes those feelings because he’s earned nothing.”

While the strength of Araiza’s leg is not in question, a bigger issue for the Bills is seeing how players adjust to the task of keeping the kicker in place. Tyler Bass. Araiza is a newcomer after he handled both wager and placebo jobs in college.

Araiza proved to be a quick learner, handling most duties in the two pre-season games, including taking the lead when Bass hit a 46-yard goal against the Colts when time up.

“I’ve been so much better,” Araiza said, referring to holding. “Holding happens so fast, you really don’t have time to think about it too much. And I’m doing a lot of things instinctively that I couldn’t do before.”

Haack is entering his second season at Buffalo and has two years left on his contract. The 5th-year player has been inconsistent last season before struggling in Buffalo’s windy elements, averaging 42.9 yards/career effort and landing only 18 out of 52 your opponent’s throw into the 20th round.

21-year-old Araiza hasn’t faced much cold weather during his three years in San Diego State, where award winner Ray Guy has established himself as one of college football of top bettors.

Wednesday’s loss became must-see moments, with Araiza setting a major college football record with a pitching average of 51.19 yards.

Buffalo also cut the veteran autumn head Tavon Austinwho has failed to meet expectations since being selected by Rams in the first round of the 2013 draft. The Bills also obtained a fifth-round selection in next year’s draft in a fourth-year offensive line-sending transaction. Cody Ford arrive The Arizona Cardinals.
