NAIROBI, Kenya – A small passenger plane crashed Sunday morning into Lake Victoria while arriving at an airport in Tanzania, and the country’s prime minister said 19 people on board were killed.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa gave the new death toll, up from three. Earlier, local authorities said 26 people on board the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam were rescued and taken to hospital. It is not clear if any of those rescued died at the hospital.

The photos show the plane heading to Bukoba airport, much of it submerged in the lake. Precision Air is a Tanzanian airline company.

Kagera provincial police chief William Mwampaghale told journalists: “We have saved quite a few people.

“When the plane was about 100 meters (328 feet) in the air, it crashed and the weather was bad. It was raining and the plane went into the water,” he said.

Mwampaghale said rescue efforts were continuing.
