Preview: Bad Blood in London. Shields-Marshall; Mayer-Baumgardner
By: Sean Crose
Saturday offers a plethora of notable matches, all at different times, which is welcome relief for fans hungry for notable matches. One of the most exciting games of the weekend is the one that will take place at the O2 Arena in London. Because that’s where two of the most important matches in the current fighting game will take place. Furthermore, there’s a lot of history and bad blood to be found in the lead up to the card’s climax matches, which makes things all the more intriguing. These infighting were supposed to have ended a few weeks ago, but Queen Elizabeth II’s death caused the proceedings to be briefly adjourned.
WBC, WBO and IBF middleweight champion Claressa Shields has established herself as the greatest female boxer of all time. And believe it or not, it’s hard to deny the former Olympian’s 12-0 dominance and impressive resume. In fact, the only boxer to ever make a mark on Shield’s record is Savanna Marshall, who holds the WBO middleweight belt and will be up against Shield in tomorrow’s main event. While Marshall’s 12-0 win over Shields is true for amateurs, old wounds are still hard to heal.
Make no mistake – Shields and Marshall are not fans of each other. But compared to Mikayla Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner, Shields and Marshall might be best friends. There is SERIOUS hostility between 17-0 Mayer and 12-1 Baumgardner. Furthermore, the IBF, WBO and WBC featherweight superweight titles will be at stake when they play on Saturday. Simply put, there’s a lot here for every warrior. Both Shields-Marshall and Mayer-Baumgardner were scheduled for ten two-minute halves. The card will air live in the US on ESPN+ Saturday, starting at 2:30 p.m. ET.
