From one Masters champion to another Masters champion. Mike Weir has been named the International team captain for the 2024 Presidents Cup, which will be held at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in his native Canada. Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, replaced Trevor Immelman, the 2008 champion.
Weir was an assistant captain on Immelman’s International team that just lost to Team USA at Quail Hollow (Charlotte, NC) 17.5-12.5. This is his third consecutive term as assistant captain.
“The Presidents Cup has become an important part of my career, so to be here at this time being announced as captain of the 2024 International Team is extraordinary,” Weir said. said in a statement. “When I look back, I have so many incredible memories attached to this event whether it was my debut in 2000; my Singles match win over Tiger in 2007 at Royal Montreal ; seeing Ernie create the shield in 2019; and then watching Trevor do it with momentum in 2022. Now, as I look to 2024, I’m super excited to be able to. lead the International Team to my home country of Canada for an experience sure to be a lifetime.”
Weir, who has participated in five Presidents Cups, succeeds Immelman and Ernie Els as the Internationals try to turn the tide in an event that hasn’t worked in their favor for years. Overall, the International team is 1-12-1 against the United States.
There’s been some talk that Immelman could get another spot after being handed the awesome captaincy in 2022, where his squad was exhausted because of LIV. Perhaps he will in the future, but Weir is clearly a contender as he was the first Canadian ever to compete in the event and played in the first time it took place in Canada in 2007. (where he won 3-1-1 including one against Tiger Woods in singles).
That year’s event also took place at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.
“Leading the team at this golf course will create a completely new history in my career that cannot be replaced,” added Weir. “I’m incredibly proud to be bringing the team home knowing that in my opinion Canadians are the most loyal and passionate sports fans in the world. We hope to have a few. Canadians on the team will help gather up some of the loudest roars the event has ever heard.”
The USA captaincy for 2024 has yet to be named.
The next Presidents Cup in the United States will take place in 2026 at the Medinah (Ill.) Country Club.
