It’s now been nine months since the Supreme Court (Ridd v JCU) ruling was made and I think the sponsors of that legal action might be interested in what happened in the meantime. wait.
As you will recall, HC ruled that JCU acted illegally in censoring me for my comment on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Quality Assurance science, but was allowed to fire me because talked about JCU’s illegal behavior. I’ve been working with Morgan Begg from IPA on a new episode that will analyze the incident in detail. Contributors include Chris Merritt, legal correspondent for The Australian, James Allan (Professor of Law at the University of Queensland) and Aynsley Kellow (Professor Emeritus at U. Tasmania). The aim is to ensure as much of what can be learned and recorded for future work to improve freedom of expression in academia.This will draw a line according to those legal proceedings.
The issue of GBR science’s quality assurance, which caused legal action, was never far from my mind, and I helped Jennifer Marohasy make a few high-quality GBR movies. You must have heard about the latest bad news about the coral reef bleaching. Have you ever wondered if the story could be more than that? Jennifer will be releasing her new film soon and has a premiere Sunday for those living in Brisbane. July 24 2:00pm – 4:00pm Newfarm Cinemas 701 Brunswick St.

I also worked (for free) with IPA on a new program for young people called Reef Rebels (RR), where we took small groups to the reef and presented a range of scientific evidence. learn about its condition. Last week we finished our reef test tour. We visited two of the reefs that were said to be “severely” bleached earlier this year. I won’t say what the RR participants found as that will be the subject of a movie and a lot of social media in the future. But you can guess. During the week, we showed RR participants a lot of reef evidence that showed that the outlook was very promising and that there were serious QA problems for the science. To strike a balance, participants also spent some time with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to gain some common sense about the Reef.We will use the tour video to create social media designed for the younger generation. I think it will give them more hope for the future of the reef. So many of them believe that the reef has perished. In my view, this is a disgrace related to child abuse. I still believe that the natural rebellious spirit of youth will eventually lead them to question whether the Reef is truly doomed. We just need to know some facts for them.
Part of the data that gives RR participants hope is coral cover statistics for 2021, which is, at a minimum, an equal coral record on the GBR. This though is believed to be three or four devastating mass bleaching events since 2016. How can there be such good coral if those events are really so severe. If we could give that single fact to every student in Australia, it would make them wonder what was going on.
That is the goal of Reef Rebels.

The Australian Progressive Institute and the Institute of Public Affairs are hosting the world premiere of “The Tragedy of Coral Bleaching” as well as its “Measurement of the Great Barrier Reef” prequel, followed by Q&A section with the films’ director and narrator Jennifer Marohasy, and science advisor Peter Ridd.
MOVIE DESCRIPTION:
The Great Barrier Reef has experienced numerous threats during its 600,000 years of life on the East Coast of Australia, perhaps none more serious than the threat listed by UNESCO as endangered.
These films show the reef’s real state, while providing some historical perspective. Is GBR damaged by bleaching? Sure. How bad is that, and is this out of the normal parameters?
Federal and state governments have spent billions of dollars “saving” the reef, while reef scientists like Professor Terry Hughes claim that although the reef may not actually be damaged threatening, but a list available would be a good way to put pressure on the federal government to do more about climate change.
Satire, misinformation and naked ambition have all gathered around this iconic Queensland natural embellishment, and this is a good opportunity to explore them and the true state of the world. reef with really knowledgeable and caring people.
