Power Attack Try Two Turns for Now Known Stakes

There’s nothing quite as satisfying to a Thoroughbred trainer as a plan that comes with a promising 2-year-old. That is the case of Power Attack the son of War Dancers trained by Kent Sweezey, who aims for $500,000 in the September 17 Nownownow Stakes program at Monmouth Park.

Nownownow, a mile on the lawn, marks the final weekend of the meet at the Jersey Shore track.

Sweezey said: “It was our plan so far to enter this race with him. “I was really surprised when we got here – shocked in a way – because it’s horse racing. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Nownownow drew 10 courts, and since it was a big money grass race, coach Chad Brown entered with a horse that, on paper, would be the one to beat. Oxymore is 2 of 2 lives, winning a pair of grass sprints in New York.

But Sweezey liked his horse’s chances for several reasons. He owns one win and two seconds after three career starts, making him the most experienced horse in the field. He believes Power Attack also wants two legs, even though all of his career starts were in five legs.

“I really don’t think sprinting is his game,” said Sweezey, who split between Monmouth Park and Gulfstream Park. “From what I’ve seen, he’s very much a two-lap horse. He’s training really well. He looks amazing. I want nothing more than to win one of Monmouth Park’s biggest races. .”

The New York-bred Power Attack, co-owned by Tee-N-Jay Farm and Sweezey, has far outstripped his coveted $20,000 price tag. He placed second in his debut in June at Belmont Park on the ground before reaching the finish line ahead of a score against the state hybrids at the Elmont oval pitch. He then clashed a match in the Tyro Stakes match at Monmouth in his most recent start, winning the runner-up title behind R3 Racing’s Sharp Aza Tack .

“When we bought (Power Attack), I didn’t think he would have the speed he has,” Sweezey said. “We sent him to Thorostock (in Ocala, Fla.) with Nick Sallusto and they busted him. Nick kept calling me and saying, ‘I like this horse.’ I said, “Come on, Nick. Be honest with me. Just tell me the truth.” He said, ‘No, I really like this horse.’

Kendrick Carmouche, who played in the first two games of the colt’s career, will join the trip.

“These are 2-year-olds, so you never know,” Sweezey said. “Some of the horses have made it twice, but many have not. We have the most experience with three races. Some of the horses have only one. And we are yet to finish second worse.

“I’m looking forward to this. This is what we’ve been aiming for since the start of the season. When I look at the pitch I see we’re having a good ride. I think he has enough pace to take them. I’m in first place. And hopefully some of those horses aren’t to go that far.”
