Popular Interior Design Trends of 2022

As the year 2022 slowly approaches its sixth month, we can stop and take a look at the prevailing home design trends and fairly certainly predict what can be expected in the months ahead.

One of the most dominant design characteristics of this year is embracing the idea of trends that can stand the test of time, a few oldies taking the stage again, and timeless classics still holding ground. With such a variety, it’ll be quite easy to redesign your home following the trends but still staying relevant when it comes to future styles.

From bold color palettes to sustainable materials and unique furniture pieces, if you’re set on making over your home, these are the ideas to incorporate.

Good old tradition

In 2022, a lot of traditional details have made a comeback. With many radical changes around the globe in the past period, people are yearning for a stronger sense of comfort, stability, and a pinch of nostalgia in their homes. The interior designers are thrilled to see our roots being honored through the use of mixed patterns, reused vintage furniture and antique pieces.

Bold colors and patterns

White and beige color palettes and brown and grey living rooms have been safe options for quite a while, but it’s time to stir things up a bit and turn to mood-boosting color choices. The universal white aesthetic is waning, taking with itself the light neutral palette of cream, white, and light grey.

Naturally, you can still use the neutral palette as your background but expand it with pops of bold hues, particularly those that imitate natural colors – these are rich but, in a way, still soft and warm. So, there will be lots of green in many shades that will reintroduce the outdoors, earthy browns, warm chocolates, stone greys, and bold tinted blacks. For a pop of color that would invigorate the space, add rust shades, and terracotta balanced with sage and navy.

Mindful and Zen

Hand in hand with the notions of comfort and refuge in our homes, the upcoming months also bring a deeper awareness of the impact our living space has on our emotional state and wellbeing. Therefore, the interior will be more personalized reflecting the homeowners’ interests and hobbies. The Zen vibe can be expressed with the use of clean lines, light wood and floating surfaces. The spaces lean towards less stuff around and being more natural and organic.

The current design trends are being reflected in their application in the bathroom as well, since this room is the space where most of us retreat to unwind at the end of a hard day. Traditional bathtubs are still on-trend, but free-standing baths are becoming more common. Placed centrally or next to a wall, they exude luxury and elegance, matching perfectly with the floating shelves and vanities, backlit mirrors and heated floors.

Sustainability

Sustainability has rightfully become an important issue for everyone, so it’s taken the design world by storm – now, everything is a must. There’s a constant search for the best materials to use that would benefit our ecosystem long-term. For this reason, sustainability has become not just a trend, but rather a long-term approach to eco-friendly design.

What we can expect to see more of is the energy-efficient design that incorporates efficient heating, cooling and lighting appliances, along with recycled or reused materials, and green finishes with the aim of reducing the ecological footprint.

Retro inspiration

Another trend that’s made a strong comeback is the retro design of the 70s, so there will be a lot of color aesthetics of that time including mid-century furniture features such as tables and cabinets with peg legs, teakwood tones and richly textured fabrics.

It only takes a touch of retro to revamp a home. Just add a gentle suggestion of sage or moss greens coupled with warm neutrals and you’ll instantly brighten up your interior. Visit the local flea markets, garage sales, or thrift stores to score items with pops of color and patterns, or with a bit of DIY, reupholster a vintage sofa that can be a perfect centerpiece in your retro living room.

Biophilic design

After two years of trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic when most of us spent our time shut inside and had to completely reorganize both our family and work life, the focus has been and will continue to be on re-establishing our link to the natural world. The easiest way to do this is through the use of biophilic design principles, where the emphasis is put on creating soothing environments with natural light and ventilation, and lots of plants that enable a visual connection to nature.

The hot new word now is jungalow – it’s a wordplay meaning jungle meets bungalow. The idea is to create an indoor jungle whether you live in a bungalow or mansion! This style has a bohemian vibe, so release your inner wanderlust and incorporate travel-inspired bright colors and patterns with natural textures, wood, woven grass, and lots of plants, from tiny potted succulents to over-sized palms and bamboo.

Interior design trends come and go, but what matters is that you find whatever aesthetics relates to your needs and preferences the best, and create an environment that benefits your overall wellbeing, whether it’s the retro comeback, contemporary minimalism, or neutral tones with bright accents.
