Polestar develops its own electric motor, battery, electric architecture


Polestar doesn’t mess up.

The company did not exist in its present form a few years ago and plans to go from No sales in 2018 hit 290,000 annual sales by 2025, with breakeven in 2023 and profitability in 2025. Here’s how.

Polestar’s goal is exponential growth with the introduction of the Polestar 3, Polestar 4 and Polestar 5. The automaker’s target is the Porsche Cayenne with Polestar 3, which it has said will be a performance-focused EV. Polestar 4 is targeting the Porsche Macan. And Polestar 5 will launch the Porsche Panamera and Taycan.

Specifically, Hembrough said, “Polestar wants to be a rival to Porsche, in terms of design, performance and innovation.”

To that end, Polestar is developing its own electric motor in Sweden. Codenamed P10, the new electric motor will be about 1.5 times more powerful than the one on the Porsche Taycan, with a target of 475 kW (slightly more than 600 hp). The motor will be compact at 36 x 50 x 64 cm) and connect to a 2-speed gearbox and the ability to disconnect for increased efficiency.

Hembrough notes that Polestar’s new engine will not be shared with Volvo or Lotus, both of which are partners and are part of the parent car group, Geely.

Polestar’s UK team is currently developing a new battery pack designed in-house with Volvo and Lotus (the latter two will have access to the pack) with a new 800-volt electrical architecture. The new design will also incorporate simple compatibility with 400V fast charging.

Hembrough is tight-lipped about battery type, carrier info and peak charging speeds, but he notes that at 103 kWh the pack will charge to 80% in 20 minutes or less. Bidirectional capability and V2X charging scenarios are also included in the kit, with speeds up to 20 kW.

All of these components will be housed in a new aluminum spaceframe architecture Polestar is developing as a clean platform for the Polestar 5. Volvo and Lotus will not have access to the new platform, according to Hembrough, although executives say Lotus will likely help with certain synergies such as suspension tuning.

The Polestar 3, which will go into production in a year with deliveries taking place in the first quarter of 2023, will run on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, Hembrough said. This will be the same platform under which Successor Volvo XC90, though it’s not yet known if any of these new components could make their way into Polestar 3.

Hembrough says Polestar will begin taking orders in mid-2022 for the Polestar 3, with the next Polestar 3 in 2023 and Polestar 5 in 2024.
