Plan B: STG Tracker’s daring bobber Suzuki GN250

Based in Buenos Aires STG Tracker custom store has a very specific style. The clue bears their name — builders Marcelo Obarrio and Germán Karp have something for street watchers and scramblers. But they also like to change things up from time to time.

This daring Suzuki GN250 bobber not the usual STG fare, but that doesn’t stop them from having fun with it. The client entrusts it with only a few requests, leaving the boys with a lot of headroom. So they look to the East, inspired by the Japanese chopper and bobber scene.

Ironically, the 1994 Suzuki model was customized as a street car when it rolled out at STG’s shop. But because its owner wanted a makeover, Marcelo and Germán quickly stripped it down to the bone, effectively rebuilding it from scratch.

Previously, STG built a GN125 bobber that looked similar, but that one still had rear suspension. And Germán built a few hardframes in the days before he and Marcelo founded STG. So in this project they decided to use the best parts of their smaller GN build, but go all out with the hardtail design.

Suzuki’s frame has been cut and reworked, with a sturdy rear end using a classic Harley-style chain tensioner. That makes the front end even taller than it is now – so STG has been on the hunt for shorter, larger diameter forks than slimmer GNs. A Honda CBX250 setup did the trick.

Next, STG fitted a set of 19F/16R wheels for a moderate stance. The front wheel uses an old set of axles lying around the shop, with vintage-style Imperial tyres. The rear uses the OEM hub and is covered with Dunlop D404 rubber.

The new fork and front hub don’t fit Suzuki’s disc brakes, so it takes some mechanical work to get everything right. The other end still uses drum brakes but has been refurbished with new shoes.

There’s also some clever engineering, where Marcelo and Germán built a chain guard that doubles as a taillight and license plate mount.

None of the GN250’s original bodywork was cut. The top is a handcrafted steel fuel tank, featuring a classic scalloped design and a seamless bottom edge. It is covered by a knurled aluminum gas cap.

Another bit of the bodywork is the relatively spacious rear fender. It is mounted on a pair of custom struts, flanked by a set of LED turn signals.

Upstairs is a thin spring-loaded, in-house made and leather-wrapped saddle. STG built a dummy oil tank just below it to house the electrical bits, including the igniter.

The engine is still original, but it has been treated for proper cleaning and presents a luxurious blend of black and polished finishes. A new carb was also added for reliability. The round-cut stainless steel exhaust system runs along the side of the car, with a sleeve just enough to minimize the possibility of burns.

There’s more customization work in the cockpit, starting with a one-off handlebar. It wears a Biltwell Inc. handle. and micro-switch with internal wiring. There’s also no speedo – just a small chrome headlight up front, attached to a custom bracket.

Despite its fun-loving nature, this shaggy bobber has a high finish. The deep burgundy paintwork has a moderate sparkle and is complemented by a black powder coat finish on most of the hard parts, with a handful of shiny bits for contrast.

Thoughtfully designed and elegantly constructed, the STG features Suzuki’s beloved commuter look that’s both sassy yet stylish. Not bad for a shop that supposedly doesn’t specialize in bobbers.
