People Are Confused About This Dog Breed After Woman Posts Photo Of It

Watching your dog grow from a puppy to an adult can bring up a lot of mixed emotions. On the one hand, it’s great to see your furry friend grow into a loyal companion. On the other hand, you may miss the days when he was a playful puppy. Many of us document his growth to remember how cute he was as a puppy. A dog mom named Alyssa did just that, but when she shared her now-adult dog on social media, the internet went crazy. Lupin is not your average dog. Lupin is a five-year-old dog with a unique mix of breeds.

Alyssa explained to Newsweek Lupin is a mix of German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, and Irish Wolfhound. There are also traces of other large breeds in his genes, such as English Mastiff, Anatolian Shepherd, and Great Pyrenees. When Alyssa posted a video showing Lupin’s transformation over five years, the internet was amazed—and not just because of his orange beard. “As a puppy, he just had a few gray whiskers on his chin that we thought he might fall out. Ironically, they grew and became the patchy coat you see today,” Alyssa shares. Despite his wizard-like appearance, Lupin is a gentle giant who enjoys interacting with people just like any other dog.

“It’s so cool to see people smile when they meet him; he gets excited and rubs his face against their legs like a giant cat. The most common comment is that he looks like a werewolf, which is absolutely true,” said Alyssa. Lupin is part of the Dire Wolf Project (DWP) breeding program.

The DWP was started in 1967 by Lois Elaine Denny with the goal of creating a dog breed that resembled the prehistoric Dire Wolf. By combining genes from breeds such as the German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, Akita, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Anatolian Shepherd, Pyrenees, and English Mastiff, it took decades to develop the specific physical and temperament traits desired for the Dire Wolf breed.

These traits included erect ears, yellow eyes, and a long, wild-patterned coat, along with a loving and gentle temperament that made them great companions. Each generation was carefully monitored to maintain these traits, leading to the creation of the American Alsatian and eventually the Lupine.

Now, Lupin is not only educating people about the history of her species, but also captivating people with her looks. Alyssa mentioned that the viral success of her videos was not something she planned, but added that it was “a fun experience to see that a lot of people’s days can be a little brighter because they happen to know about us.” Click on the video below to see Lupin before and after!
