Partnership with DOE to accelerate US two-way charging integration for electric vehicles and infrastructure

The United States Department of Energy and several stakeholders have released a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote two-way charging integration for electric vehicles and infrastructure.

First discovered by focusing on solar energy PV MagazineThe Memorandum of Understanding brings together several offices of the Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission, the cities of Los Angeles and Lancaster (California), vehicle manufacturers Ford, General Motors, and Lucid. , Nissan and Lion Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric companies, and the 11th Local union of the International Brotherhood of Electricity, among others.

The goal of the partnership, which is based on seemingly California-based participants, is to bring stakeholders together and coordinate efforts on two-way charging, allowing electric vehicles to discharge back to the grid. . Automakers have also promoted it as a backup power source for homes, a way to power tools or electronics, and even a way to charge other vehicles. .

“The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding is to collaboratively explore investment opportunities in research, engineering, and infrastructure to accelerate and enable [plug-in vehicle] integrated into the grid,” potentially including demonstration two-way charging stations, the document says.

Several demonstration projects have been launched to show how two-way charging coordination of a fleet of electric vehicles can stabilize the grid. But the lack of production facilities capable of two-way charging has made this a moot point.

But for now, some automakers are hinting that they want to make two-way charging widely available soon. A report earlier this month said Volkswagen plans to add two-way charging to electric vehicles based on its popular MEB platform by the end of 2022.

Ford F-150 Lightning will be one of the first to offer corresponding home hardware and is warranted according to the regulations of the car manufacturer.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Lucid Air Both are designed for bidirectional charging, but no automaker details the home hardware needed to send electricity back to the grid.

Several companies, including Ford and General Motors, are also continuing to study the role of electric vehicles in stabilizing the grid through pilot programs. GM and Pacific Gas and Electric announced such a program for California in March.
