Panasonic announces Lumix S 35mm F1.8 prime: Digital photography review

Panasonic has announced the Lumix S 35mm F1.8, the latest in a series of full-frame prime lenses for the Leica/Panasonic/Sigma L-mount.

The 35mm F1.8 becomes the fourth lens in a series of similar primes, meaning L-mount users can choose from Lumix S 24, 35, 50 or 85mm F1.8 primes, all both share comparable dimensions and ergonomics. Panasonic points out that this will allow them to be interchanged when used on a gimbal without needing to be rebalanced (they are similar but not identical in weight).

The 35mm F1.8 features 11 elements in 9 groups, including 3 aspherical elements and 3 ED elements. Like other S primes, it is designed to be dust and moisture resistant. It has a 9-blade curved aperture and can focus as close as 0.24m (9.4″).

The Lumix S 35mm F1.8 is the same width and length as the 24mm, 50mm and 85mm F1.8 S primes. They differ slightly in weight but have a matching filter thread design and focus ring.

Panasonic has also announced that it is developing an 18mm F1.8 lens for release at a future date. Given the super-wide focal length and Panasonic’s description of the 35mm as the fourth in a series of four lenses, we didn’t expect the 18mm F1.8 to fit in the well-sized F1.8 series of lenses. fit. [Update Nov 10: despite implying that the 35mm completed its set of size-matched F1.8 primes, Panasonic has subsequently shown a rendering of the 18mm showing the same silhouette as the existing four lenses]

The company has also said that the new firmware will improve the image stabilization performance in their four full-frame zoom lenses for video recording. The 70-200mm F2.8, 70-200mm F4, 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 and 24-104mm F4 will all receive the update. New firmware for the 24-105mm F4 will also enhance the effectiveness of the Dual IS 2 system that combines the lens and in-body stabilization (using both systems simultaneously to correct pitch and yaw movements). ), to achieve an IS rating of 7.0EV of correction when used with the S1, S1R, or S1H camera bodies.

We’ve had the opportunity to shoot with the S 35mm F1.8 over the past few days and have prepared a series of sample shots:

Press Release:

Panasonic announces compact, lightweight LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 (S-S35) for LUMIX S Series

New 35mm wide-angle fixed focal length lens with large aperture of F1.8

Newark, NJ (October 9, 2021) – Panasonic is pleased to introduce its new large-aperture fixed focal length lens, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 (S-S35), as the fourth addition to a series of four large-aperture F1.8 lenses based on the L-Mount. system standards. A total of four F1.8 fixed focal length lenses from the LUMIX S Series including the 85mm (S-S85), 50mm (S-S50), 24mm (S-S24) and new 35mm (S-S35) lenses are available. general characteristics of the size and position of the control elements to give practical advantages in use. The focus of these lenses is comparable, allowing for easy and quick lens exchange with minimal balance adjustment when the camera is on the gimbal. The consistent diameter also allows the use of conventional filters and the user will benefit from its descriptive performance.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 consists of eleven lens elements in nine groups including three aspherical elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The use of three aspherical elements provides high descriptive performance and beautiful bokeh, which are advantages common to the F1.8 series of lenses. The ED lens also effectively suppresses chromatic aberration. The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is well-suited for versatile situations including landscape, snapshot and portraiture. The 0.24m minimum focusing distance also produces high-quality close-up shots.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 features smooth, silent operation that works with the camera’s high-speed, high-precision contrast AF system with sensor-drive at up to 240 fps/ second. For non-linear settings, the focus is shifted by an amount that varies with the rotation of the focus ring, while the focus is shifted by an amount specified by the rotation quantum of the focus ring for linear setting. Sensitivity, or the amount of focus shift per rotation quanta, can be selected from 90 to 360 degrees x 30 degrees to allow expected focus operation. The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 also excels in video performance with a mechanism that suppresses focusing, which is a serious problem for all interchangeable lenses designed for still photography. Coupled with micro-stepping aperture control for smooth exposure changes, this lens can capture professional-quality video.

With a compact size of around 295g and light weight, the LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 has great portability to match the S5, LUMIX’s smallest full-frame model. Rugged dust/water jet resistance*first designed to withstand use in extreme conditions even at 10 degrees below zero for extreme portability. The filter diameter is 67 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

To further strengthen the S-Series lens system, we are developing a new 18mm ultra-wide-angle fixed focal length lens with a large aperture of F1.8. With the development of new lenses, firmware updates*2 are also available for the regular S-R70200, S-E70200, S-R70300 and S-R24105 lenses to improve Image Stabilizer stability during video recording. Additionally, the image stabilization performance of Dual IS 2 has been increased from 6.5 stops to 7.5 stops*3 to take pictures when the S-R24105 is mounted on the LUMIX S1H, S1R or S1.

The Panasonic and L-Mount Systems Alliance is committed to further expanding the L-Mount lens lineup, as well as enhancing performance, to meet demand and maximize customer satisfaction.

*1 Dust and Splash Protection does not guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is directly exposed to dust and water.
*2 Firmware update programs for the S-R70200 (Ver.1.2), S-E70200 (Ver.1.1), S-R70300 (Ver.1.1) and S-R24105 (Ver.1.2) are available at https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/index4.html
*3 Based on CIPA standard [Yaw/Pitch direction: focusing distance f=105mm.] Performance is guaranteed when the S-R24105 is mounted on a LUMIX S1H, S1R or S1, as of November 9, 2021.

LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 (S-S35) will be available in late November for $699.99
