Pair of BMW Z1s in the huge Bimmer collection at auction

Upcoming auction in Munich unloading a large collection BMW car vehicle. Included in the lots were a number of cars rarely seen before the war, a rare 2002 Cabriolet is just one of 200, and even a few race cars. However, the most interesting and non-BMW of them all is definitely a pair of Z1 roadsters. You know, the ones with disappearing doors and interchangeable plastic body panels.

Produced from 1989-91, the Z1 can be considered the forerunner of the Z3 and, after that, the Z4. Both have “z” in the name and both are roadsters, but that’s where the similarities end. While BMW produced close to 280,000 Z3 roadsters (and around 17,000 clown coupes), the Z1’s total production run ended after just 8,000 pieces.

The Z1 is the product of the newly formed BMW Technik division, founded in the 1980s to research cutting-edge technologies. As such, it’s more of a concept than a production car. Each one is hand-built and only six a day are made at the workshop in Munich. The steel monocoque body is hot-dip galvanized as a structure, which BMW says has increased torsional stiffness by 25 percent compared to a chassis built from separate pieces of galvanized steel.

The body panels are made of GE-developed thermoplastic and can be removed by the owner. BMW is for you to change color of the car occasionally (and, certainly, for more money when you buy a second set of body panels).

Its real party trick are the doors, which are half the size and slide down the body of the car to get in and out. In addition, the car has a smooth chassis to improve aerodynamics and boasts the first use of BMW’s multi-link double wishbone rear suspension, which will further make the E36 the a beloved sports sedan.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the collection is that not one but two extremely low mileage Z1s are currently being liquidated. One example red on gray only 350 kilometers (217 miles) on the clock, and a example dark blue on tanned skin only 61 kilometers (40 miles). Both are 1989 models, once part of a large private BMW collection that is now being sold off.

Other cars from the collection include a 1928 Dixi 3/15 DA-1a German Austin 7 built under license, a beautiful one 1936 319/1 convertibleone 3.0 CSL “Batmobile”one Prototype BMW 850 CSione CAR M1, and many more.
