Our first look at the Toyota C-HR 2024 hybrid crossover

Next generation Toyota C-HR crossover was first tracked inside and out before it arrived in Australia first half of 2024.

This is new C-HR previewed for the first time in 2022 with C-HR opening conceptfeatures an evolution of the current model’s coupe-like styling plus some design cues from the new model Prius.

One notable difference is that this camouflaged prototype has flat door handles for both the front and rear doors, while the concept has a hidden rear door handle like the current model.

Our spy photographers have also glimpsed the interior of this next-generation C-HR, and it looks like it borrows the gearshift selector, tablet-style touchscreen, and climate controls. from the new Prius.

EQUAL previous reportThe second-generation Toyota C-HR will be offered exclusively with a hybrid engine.

There will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version but Toyota Australia has excluded it for our market. The company has never offered PHEV versions of the Prius and RAV4 locally.

While hybrids make up the majority of sales of other Toyota models locally, the next C-HR will be only the second Toyota to be sold exclusively here as a hybrid after the now-discontinued Prius. export.

Toyota is targeting 50% of local sales to be electric – including electric vehicles like bZ4Xuntil 2025. Last year, Toyota sold 72,815 hybrid vehicles, accounting for 31.5% of its total sales.

The upcoming C-HR is made in Japan, China, and Türkiye. The Australian models come with Japanese specs, which is part of the reason why we don’t have the more powerful 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain available in Europe.

New generation also confirmed for Turkish production, and will be the first PHEV produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Türkiye. The battery will be produced internally from December 2023.

Toyota is calling the Turkish expansion another stepping stone to Toyota’s 100% CO goal2 reduce the European car line by 2035.

As before, the powerful C-HR will be positioned alongside garland of crosses in the small SUV segment, above the smaller size yaris cross and below the larger RAV4. Think of it as a ‘Coupe’ Corolla Cross.

It is likely that the C-HR will have a similar powertrain line-up to the Prius that has just launched overseas, including both 103kW 1.8-litre and 144kW 2.0-litre hybrid options, and a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid. liter 164kW.

The new Prius PHEV has a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery and according to preliminary European specifications should be able to achieve a range of 69 km on electricity alone.

Currently, prices for the C-HR in Australia start at $31,715 pre-road for the 1.2-litre GXL 2WD turbocharged petrol engine and expand to $38,465 pre-road for the GR. Sport and Koba 2WD Hybrids.

As a hybrid-only offering, expect to see a higher base price for the new C-HR series.

The original C-HR was revealed at the 2016 Geneva motor show and debuted in Australia as a petrol-only proposal in early 2017.

The hybrid option, available in other markets since launch, didn’t arrive in Australia until the mid-life upgrade arrived locally in December 2019.
