The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating a tunnel collapse Amazon a warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois, an agency spokesman said Monday. The collapse was caused by a tornado that devastated the area and killed six workers.
A tornado on Friday hit Amazon’s delivery warehouse, known as DLI4. Governor JB Pritzker said six workers were killed, one injured and 45 people were safely rescued.
OSHA has six months to complete its investigation, issue citations and recommend fines if found to have violated workplace safety and health regulations, an OSHA spokesperson said. , Scott Allen told CNBC in a statement. Allen said the agency has had compliance officers at the warehouse since Saturday to assist.
Representatives from Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the OSHA investigation.
Amazon previously said it was working to monitor the situation and assist with remediation, including supporting local relief efforts in Edwardsville.
“We are deeply saddened by the news that members of our Amazon family have passed away as a result of the storm in Edwardsville, IL,” said Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by the tornado.”
