Open Entries for the 2nd Annual Art Racing Competition


The Art of Racing, which opened last year as a partnership between 1/ST, the Maryland Jockey Club and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), kicked off its 2023 program on January 9. Now, the call for registration has been extended to artists nationwide, and starting today, artists can submit their entries to www.preakness.com/the-art-of-racing. Entries will be accepted until March 10.

This unique art competition celebrates the second crown jewel of the Triple Crown Series and its impact on Baltimore, as artists are invited to create and submit original, two-dimensional visual artwork depicts the unique elements of thoroughbred horse racing and Preakness Stakes. Last year’s show attracted nearly 150 entries and included an open voting period in which the public was invited to visit. www.preakness.com/the-art-of-racing to vote for their favorite artwork.

From March 13 to March 27, visitors to The Art of Racing website can vote. The 10 people who received the most votes will then be entered into the final category, with the winning work chosen by a respected panel of judges representing the arts, business, philanthropic and philanthropic communities. political support for Park Heights as the home of Preakness 148.

The winning artist of the second annual contest will be awarded US$4,000 and two tickets to Preakness 148 on May 20, 2023. In addition, their work will be reproduced on the weekly collection. Selected Preakness 148 merchandise will be available to purchase online and onsite during Preakness weekend. Once again, proceeds from merchandise sales will go to the Park Heights Renaissance, a nonprofit that pursues affordable housing and job opportunities for Park Heights residents.

1/ST and Park Heights Renaissance continuously collaborate to raise awareness of Park Heights’ long-standing culture. The art of racing is part of a series of initiatives between the 1/ST and the Park Heights Renaissance including the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and the George E. Mitchell Park Heights Community Fellowship Grant. As an extension of the legacy of late community advocate George E. Mitchell, The Art of Racing recognizes and honors individuals who demonstrated a similarly remarkable commitment to the Park Heights community.

The winner of last year’s contest was Theresia Zhang, an MICA student, whose original illustration titled “Speed” was selected from a total of 147 entries.

Beginning in the 1970s, the partnership between MICA and Preakness Stakes was revived thanks to The Art of Racing.
