ON1 announced the latest update: ON1 Photo Raw 2022.5

Twice per year, ON1 produces free upgrades to their Photo Raw program. The latest version is just out, and it has a number of features that are expected to be added, plus improvements to its existing toolset.

Version 2022.5 is free for those who already own the software and has some significant changes to the existing software.

If you don’t know, On1 Photo Raw Photo has an organizer that works similar to Lightroom Classic’s Gallery module, a raw processor, an image editor with layers, a photo effects application , an HDR processor and an image changer, all rolled into one parcel. It comes with a phone app that can be linked to it using ON1’s proprietary cloud service.

It’s a smart piece of software accessible to users of all levels with a variety of one-touch filters and more advanced adjustments. Much of the workflow is non-destructive.

Exciting but not unexpected, this upgrade includes full integration with ON1 Resize AI that I reviewed a few days ago.

The update includes a bulk upgrade so you can open multiple photos at once, possibly an entire folder, and then adjust and sync settings across all of them.

There is a new and improved LensMatch. This automatic lens correction detects and removes distortion when shooting raw and uses the appropriate lens from the camera manufacturer. In the past, many users needed to use an external lens configuration, but that is no longer the case. This function will also remember any manual profile adjustments you make so they can be used as default values for the lens.

Masks in ON1 have always been at the forefront of Adobe’s game. Their Sky Swap AI has been improved with this release to give better results especially with trees in the white sky.

It also has some new features. ON1’s excellent AI NoNoise will be enhanced for better control of non-raw files. When ON1 NoNoise AI is first released, an alert box will pop up, indicating that it is optimized for raw only; now it also handles other file types.

I prefer ON1’s raw processing output to Lightroom’s. Furthermore, switching between modules is much faster than switching between Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. Not only that, it’s more intuitive to use than Photoshop.

Image quality is of prime importance. Our goal is to always deliver better visual outputs than anything else on the market. We’re using AI to take on tasks that you can’t do with other apps. We don’t use AI to take over the art of photography or use it to eliminate the creative process. – Craig Keudell, President of ON1.

For me it’s great that almost all the tools are available in one package, mainly because it will support raw files of OM System (Olympus) OM-1 Camera. It will also help Canon EOS R5C, Panasonic Lumix DC-GH6, Leica M11, Fujifilm X-T30 IIand Nikon Z 9.

Individual modules are also available as plugins that work with other software, including Lightroom and Photoshop.

This update doesn’t seem as impressive as the change from 2021.1 to 2021.5. However, there has been a lot of work from their studio lately that goes into Resize AI. You can read my review of that software by clicking here. I look forward to seeing it in action. However, version 2022.1 also has a host of new features:

  • Liquify Tool
  • advanced search
  • Smart albums
  • Snapshots
  • Crop Tool Presets
  • Visualize the dust when retouching
  • Topographic maps
  • Performance improvements
  • Improved Sky Swap Mask
  • Updates for the latest Cameras and Lenses
  • Sky Swap AI
  • Create time lapse
  • Integrated ON1 NoNoise AI
  • Photoshop Plugin Server
  • Import and export again
  • Line Mask Tool
  • Backup and restore
  • Favorites in the Browse module
  • Customizable thumbnails
  • Gesture support
  • Apple Silicon Native

The free update for all owners of ON1 Photo RAW 2022 will be available in June. ON1 Photo RAW 2022 retails at $99.99 for a perpetual license. Owners of any prior version (prior to 2022 version) of any ON1 product can order version 2022.5 for an upgrade price of $79.99. On1 offers a free 14-day trial of the currently available 2022.1 version. The 2022.5 beta will arrive in June when this update is released.

Subscribers will receive automatic updates as part of their plan. As always, ON1 Photo RAW subscriptions include the latest version of ON1 Photo Raw for both desktop and mobile, as well as cloud syncing and each ON1 plugin. Plans start at $7.99 per month or $89.99 per year.
