Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Manchester United boss set to leave club after Watford loss
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to leave the club following a 4-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday.
There is no official confirmation yet but it is understood all of the club’s senior figures, including home owner Glazer, have discussed his future.
It is decided the Watford loss will be Solskjaer’s last and the terms of his departure will be agreed upon.
Technical director Darren Fletcher will take over for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Villarreal.
It is likely that first-team coach Michael Carrick could stay at Old Trafford despite being part of the management team responsible for a string of poor results in which United have won just four of their last 13 matches and two of their last eight matches.
Some feel the 48-year-old was lucky to have survived the recent international break, having previously suffered a 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool and a much more comprehensive defeat by Manchester City. against the proposed 2-0 scoreline.
The club’s hierarchy is stuck with Solskjaer, believing the Norwegian can turn the tide.
However, both the defeat to Watford and form, including a red card for captain Harry Maguire, changed the game.
And, with Champions League knockout stages at stake if they can’t get at least a draw against Villarreal, United’s senior figures were not prepared to risk beating Unai Emery’s side.
They were the better team so far when they played at Old Trafford in September, only to have United beat them to a last-minute goal from Cristiano Ronaldo.
United goalkeeper David de Gea described the defeat to Watford as “embarrassing” and “another nightmare”.
It leaves the team seventh in the Premier League, after a one-match winning streak in seven games.
Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho as interim manager in December 2018.
Then he was given the job all the time in March 2019 with a three-year agreement and in July signed a new agreement through 2024.
