Nyquist Filly Tops Day’s Weanling Ranks at $210,000

A filly by Nyquist   from the female family of grade 1 winner Dream Tree  topped the weanling ranks during the Book 3 opener Nov. 13 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, going the way of Robert O’Callaghan, who signed the ticket as Bolter Bloodstock, for $210,000.

“She’s a Woods Edge pinhook. She’ll come back here next year, most likely in Keeneland September. For us she was the pick of the day,” O’Callaghan said. “She’s by a very good sire in Nyquist, whose proven with (grade) 1 fillies. And then physically she had it all—size, scope, strength, great action, very correct. She was a very simple filly. Hopefully she’ll be well-liked next year and we’ll make a bit of money on her.”

The filly, consigned as Hip 1183 by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, is from the fourth crop of Darley’s Nyquist, sire of last year’s champion 2-year-old filly Vequist . She was bred in Kentucky by Bloodstock Investments VIII and is the second foal out of the winning Orientate mare Chifa. Lamar Stables purchased Chifa for $87,000 out of the Paramount Sales consignment to the 2020 Keeneland November sale while the mare was carrying the Nyquist filly, who was foaled on Jan. 28 this year.

Chifa is a half sister to Afleet Maggi, who produced Dream Tree, a daughter of Nyquist’s sire, Uncle Mo  . Dream Tree won the Starlet (G1) and Desi Arnaz stakes at 2 and took the Las Virgenes (G2) and Prioress (G2) stakes at 3. Afleet Maggi also produced the stakes-placed O’ Maggi .

“It’s a big help,” O’Callaghan said of the Dream Tree relation. “The Uncle Mo line has already worked in the family and hopefully it’ll make her slightly easier to sell next year.”

Different graded stakes winners on the web page for Hip 1183 embody Good Temper, Academy Award, Statuette, Magical Feeling, and Golden Ticket , the latter of which won the Travers Stakes (G1).

O’Callaghan said the strength of the market that has continued from the yearling sales and into the breeding stock sales can make it hard to purchase a horse, but he is glad to see the strong activity for the industry.

“We have found it very strong and hard to buy. We’ve bought some but we’re probably down in numbers than in previous years and our expenditure is probably up, which isn’t great,” he said. “But it’s a good sign of the market; it’s a healthy market. There are plenty of buyers, both pinhookers and end users. There’s some good foals there but it’s been strong and hard to buy. It’s good for us next year as well (at the yearling sales). It all goes full circle.”
