Nvidia re-imagines the metaverse as a collaboration platform

Disclosure: Nvidia is the author’s client.

Nvidia GTC Conference was once my favorite conference due to its focus on games; it has grown into my favorite conference for predicting the future. The Nvidia of today is very different from the company I first joined a few decades ago, if you put them side by side, the older company looks like a small subsidiary of Nvidia today.

It moves from changing engineering and gameplay to becoming the foundation for the upcoming metaverse. I wonder if Nvidia should change the name to Meta rather than let Facebook steal that tag. Nvidia is involved in advanced robotics, autonomous cars, airplanes and chips (part of IBM’s recent self-propelled train test), advanced AI and even medical research (their Jetson module is used for Genomics analysis). And that’s only a partial list.

In This week’s GTC, the company even revealed Earth 2. In short, they are likely to have a more significant impact.

One of the more interesting examples Nvidia proposed at GTC involves using the metaverse to collaborate using fully rendered avatars, bringing us closer to where we want to be (and give me a glimpse of what the company will do in the future).

Away from the ‘Strange Valley’?

One of the concepts that animators talk about is Strange valley, an animated version of a character that is close to reality but just enough to make people uncomfortable. This is essentially why cartoons are still cartoons; we can create higher levels of realism, but until we make it realistic enough, the results won’t be there.

Nvidia introduces avatars that follow a ray of light with very high resolution can perform hand movements, move around the virtual room with feet and make facial expressions. It represents Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, but what’s interesting is that Jensen doesn’t run it. It speaks in his voice, but uses conversational AI to answer questions when Huang will respond. It’s not a realistic version of Huang, so it avoids the Uncanny Vally issue, but it’s much more realistic than other avatar approaches I’ve seen.

Avatar Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO Nividia

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s avatar uses conversational AI to answer questions.

Most avatars on the market Floating like amputated ghosts and so spooky. I can’t imagine long meetings with a bunch of avatars like that.

Avatars and the future of collaboration

Seeing this factor in Huang’s keynote made me think about what Nvidia might show us in the future. For example, one of the problems with video conferencing and video collaboration is that if you pay a lot for a great camera it tends to benefit the people who see you. But it doesn’t improve your experience and these high definition cameras show pretty much everything: sunken hairline, problems with your complexion, wrinkles, any hair that isn’t and any mess in your skin. your clothes or your office.

But with real-time photorealistic rendering and a person with the right skills, you can not only create a perfectly timed, realistic version of yourself, but a virtual office using the same elements. metaverse element to create an office that would make anyone jealous. (Go to 13 minutes of Jensen’s speech to see what I’m talking about.)

This is the interesting part. By using a conversational computer like Huang did, you can ask your digital twin to attend a meeting and let the system take notes – as if you were there. The system will have access to your schedule, recorded work progress, and anything else you’ve created, allowing it to answer simple questions. We all have to go to meetings where you need to find out the status of a project or keep things on track. A conversational AI can do it better than you.

With results summary notes, you can save n hours or two meeting, get a briefing session – written or verbal – on only the issues you care about – and use your time. for more important projects. And unless someone asks a probing question that the avatar can’t answer, it’ll look at the other attendees like you’re there. Even if it receives a probing question, the avatar can transcribe and report the query in real time, and you can text back the response to maintain the illusion.

Meeting or not meeting?

I often think that the most effective way to organize meetings is not to hold meetings. And Nvidia shows how one of your digital representatives can get what you need from a meeting without wasting your time on unimportant matters.

When I graduated college, I thought my ideal job would be to spend all day in meetings talking about everything. Then I had a job that spent all day talking about everything but not getting much done; it almost drove me crazy. Now, my idea of a great job is where other people attend meetings for me to get work done.

At GTC, Nvidia gave me hope for my favorite future, which is akin to flying sports car with four propellersCompany executives are also mentioned. Like Christmas came early this year.
