The Nissan Z still new on the ground, but a mysterious test mule has been spotted on a winding mountain road with remarkably small camouflage. The partially concealed prototype is believed to be a performance variant of the 2023 Nissan Zwith a redesigned nose that could address one of the most controversial elements of sports car Designs.
A picture posted on a web forum NewNissanZ.com shows what unmistakably a 2023 Z with camouflage user interface. Despite the mask, however, we can see that in fact the grille is divided horizontally. It is reminiscent of a concept (above) Nissan showed at Tokyo Auto Salon in January.
The large rectangular extension has been a polarizing aspect of the Z’s look since the concept was announced. While it’s faithful to the grille on the original 1969 Fairlady Z – or the 240Z for us Americans – on that car, a chrome bumper splits the aperture visually. With 2023 Z there is no separate case, so between Launch of Z Proto and produce Z Nissan added a lighter finish on the pads to help soften the visual impact of the grille.
Forum members were quick to point out that the test mule was more clearly distinguished from the production Z with the Recaro chair.
