Nissan announces game-changing EV battery development website
Nissan on Friday disclosure a prototype manufacturing facility for laminated solid-state battery cells — a potentially game-changing technology that the Japanese automaker hopes to bring to market by 2028.
The new facility is located in the Nissan Research Center in Kanagawa Prefecture. Nissan will use the facility to study the materials, design, and manufacturing processes it will use to manufacture solid-state battery prototypes. The company then plans to set up a trial production line at the Yokohama Plant in fiscal year 2024.
Solid-state batteries could completely make electric cars significantly cheaper. Nissan believes that with the all-solid-state battery, it can reach $75/kWh in fiscal year 2028 and $65/kWh after that. That would make electric cars about the same cost as gas-powered cars.
Nissan is expected to use all solid-state batteries in a wide range of electric vehicle segments, including pickup trucks, for all intents and purposes. They offer twice the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries, charge times are significantly shorter, and they can be made with cheaper materials.
