Nintendo reduces switch box size to combat supply shortages

According to one Nikkei report, Nintendo will reduce the packaging size of the Nintendo Switch. This will help improve shipping efficiency. In turn, it will increase the speed at which the Switch is available in stores or for people shopping online. [Thanks, Nibellion!]

Nikkei has reported that Nintendo will reduce the packaging of the Switch by 20%. The plan is to help customers around the world get their Nintendo Switch faster. But it will also improve Nintendo’s own sales. Vooks Sum the numbers and note that the original Nintendo Switch box is 14% larger than the new box Nintendo Switch OLED Box. Behind the scenes, Nintendo has begun to cut back on its packaging.

While the Nintendo Switch’s annual sales were down, Nintendo sold a total of 111 million units since the first release in 2017. More 100 million users been playing it every year. That means the vast majority of players who bought the Switch are still actively enjoying it, rather than letting it collect dust.

It sold more than the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million units), but still trailed the Nintendo Game Boy (118.69 million). Although Nintendo is trying to sell more consoles through changing the size of the box, lack of semiconductor and various major releases are also affecting its sales numbers.

It’s unclear when exactly Nintendo will make changes to its box size. But it is likely that the Nintendo Switch boxes that appear in the near future will look significantly smaller.
