Nikon Announces New All-Black Edition of Z fc as well as Special Edition NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 SE

Nikon puts a stylish twist on several of its Z mirrorless cameras.

Yes, I admit that. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, one of the main reasons why I really like it Nikon Z fc the camera when it was first released was for styling. If that makes me a (really old) hipster, so be it. It’s completely clear to me that the way a camera looks has no effect on how it behaves. But for a camera like the Z fc, a great everyday camera, I can’t help but appreciate that it elevates my outfit. What can I say? I like to be liked.

Of course, this doesn’t mean it doesn’t take great photos either. I’ve been amazed at how much I’ve used the Z fc for personal photography since I bought it. As a professional photographer, I have plenty of other horse cameras with more appealing specs. But for many other everyday tasks, such as taking photos for a walk or even making Zoom calls, the Z fcs are as often out of my pocket as my big guns. And today, Nikon announced two new products for those who appreciate a little style with their gear.

The first is a the all-black version of the Z fc. The camera comes in a retro silver and black base model, and has been offered in several custom color variants. But those who want to keep a lower profile, appreciated for any street photography tool, will be pleased to know that you can now purchase an all-black version to show off the essence of legendary FM2 film camera. The camera itself is the same as the original Z fc on the inside. Same 20.9-megapixel APS-C sensor. Same 4K 30fps video recording. Same screen fully matched. However, if the original metal Z fc is a bit too flashy for your taste, the low-profile all-black version might succeed.

Keeping the theme of beautiful craftsmanship, Nikon will also announce a special edition NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 SE . Lens. I already own Z 28mm Special edition version. It is the same as the non-special edition other than the external style and color scheme. The silver ring around the special edition makes it the perfect partner for my black and silver Z fc. Again, I’m amused.

The new Z 40mm f/2 SE offers a similar option for the 40mm focal length. Both the 28mm and 40mm have full frame coverage, so I use them on both my full frame Nikons as well as my Z fc. On the Z fc, 28mm is about 41-42mm on the cropped sensor. 40mm is my personal favorite ring focal length, so it’s perfect for me. And while I have absolutely no idea whether Nikon will ever produce a full frame version of the Z fc, I can see the Z 40mm f/2 SE being perfect for that. I don’t have any information that such a camera will ever exist. But, just put it out there in case my pleas get into my right ear.

Meanwhile, the 40mm special edition can be the perfect companion for your Z camera, adding a little flair to your photography.
