NFL commish says ‘at least’ four German games until 2025
MUNICH – The NFL plans to hold more regular games in Germany, possibly sooner than expected.
Commissioner Roger Goodell told a fan forum in Munich on Saturday that the NFL will host “at least” four games in Germany through 2025.
The current deal includes Sunday’s first match in Germany plus an annual match for the next three seasons – with Munich and Frankfurt each hosting twice.
“In our commitment, we’re going to play at least the next four years and with at least four games,” Goodell said ahead of Sunday’s game between Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks football team at the Allianz Arena. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it expands beyond that level any time soon.”
The commissioner did not take questions from the media but his comments may reflect that both New England Patriots and Chief of Kansas City is lobbying for next year’s game.
There are questions about the availability of Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in 2023. Azteca, which will host San Francisco 49ers and The Arizona Cardinals on November 21, may be renovated next year in preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
Germany has become the NFL’s top market in Europe and Munich has been buzzing all week about Sunday’s game, led by the seven-time Super Bowl champion brave cat.
Besides Munich and Frankfurt, Düsseldorf was shortlisted from the eight German cities that originally bid to host the matches.
