News on Shipping – Are you up to that?

Kip Hansen news summary – February 18, 2022

There is a lot of talk about reducing CO2 emissions from international transport. There’s an entry in today’s news that may lead you to a new insight into the matter. (It did for me.)

News on the front page of the NY Times online with the name “The ship carrying 1,100 Porsches and other luxury cars is on fire and drifting“.

The ship is 200 meters (or 600 feet) long and 32 meters (100 feet) wide, with about 30 feet in the water (draught or draft).

The Portuguese Navy provided this photo of the ship yesterday:

The New York Times report:

“A huge cargo ship believed to be carrying thousands of vehicles, including 1,100 Porsches, caught fire and washed up on the shores of the Azores on Thursday after its 22 crew members were rescued from the water. ship.”

“The fire broke out Wednesday morning in the cargo hold of the ship, known as the Felicity Ace, which sailed from Emden, Germany, on February 10 and was scheduled to arrive in Davisville, RI, on Wednesday, according to a ship tracking website. The ship was about 200 miles from Terceira Island in the Azores, Portuguese island territory, when Portuguese forces moved in on Wednesday to evacuate the crew.

“CD driver, an automotive websiteit was reported that the Volkswagen Group estimated nearly 4,000 vehicles were on board, including 189 Your Majesty. ”

The Portuguese Navy made a successful and dangerous rescue of 22 crew members and the ship is now adrift, now shown below along with other ships in the vicinity. The three islands to the north are the Portuguese Azores of Faial, Pico and São Jorge:

The train fire was terrible. They are diesel fueled furnaces in a sealed steel box. The heat quickly rose to incredible levels and crews were often unable to enter or even get close to the fire area to put out the fire. Pouring water over a fire usually only spreads the burning fuel. Fortunately for these marines, the Portuguese kept the naval ships in the Azores and the rescue arrived just in time. If they were in the middle of the Atlantic, their fate would have been different.

Somewhat interesting, Times includes a bit of human interest: “Matt Farah, a car enthusiast and editor of Smoking tiresbeen waiting for his 2022 frozen berry metal The Boxster Spyder, which retails for around $123,000 and is modified to its exacting specifications, as of August. “Hands down the best sports car of all time.”

Interesting facts: Porsche Description of Boxter Spyder this way:

Completely illogical.

A firefighting brand. One person goes to work. Aim for the sky. The new 718 Spyder is an exclamation point in a world rife with ‘what if’s. A pedestrian like no other. There is no compromise. No regret. Without a reasonable argument.

So how many ships were in the vicinity when Felicity Ace catch fire? I counted about half a dozen within 50 knots – too far to help in a man-on-board situation, but close enough to come and rescue the marines from lifeboats. In this case, the Portuguese Battleship Setubal (red) joined and can be seen approaching Faial Island in the Azores after it removed the sailors from the ship Felicity Ace by helicopter.

Why report this ongoing issue on WUWT? What is climate or science of connection?

This image might give you an idea:

That’s a lot of ships……

“The shipping industry now uses more 5 million barrels of fuel per day, which includes high-sulfur fuels, lighter marine fuels and small amounts of LNG, according to Citigroup. ” … “The fuel now used in transportation is the bottom of the tank. It’s a very heavy black diesel that shippers use because it’s cheap. It is also one of the most polluting fuels. ” (CNBC here)

Quote mentions Fuel fuel which one is thick, black, dirty? heavy fuel oil.

We are in the middle of a supply chain difficult as a result of the government’s response to the worldwide Covid pandemic – which has impacted not only manufacturing but also the shipping, ports and trucking segments of the supply chain.

inside Mad Mad World of Net-Zero, how are we going to power all those ships and boats? How will we move manufactured products from Asia to North America and Europe? How will we deliver grains and other foods to Asia and Africa? How would we do this in a Net-Zero world without petroleum products?

Author’s comment:

Thankfully, I’ve never had to fight a large fire on an ocean liner. Among the merchants, I received fire prevention training and fire fighting training on ships. A few minor fires can occur – a kitchen fire, an electrical fire or two welding fires (conflict… Always involves not having the proper fire meter installed) and small fires in the room machine. Steel ships are not flammable but almost everything in them is.

And, man, that’s a lot of ships and boats at sea – now publicly detectable and reportable by AIS (automatic identification system). VesselFinder.com there are both free and paid versions to find registered vessels. There are also mobile phone apps, although I haven’t used them yet. Readers who have insight into the best AIS mobile apps should share them with us in the comments section.

I’m afraid Net-Zero is completely impractical or, in other words, impossible now and in the near future.

Despite the bad news of losing all those Porsches and Bentleys, the rich and famous will continue to waste precious resources on fast cars, fast boats, big houses (usually more one), pocket for pets and expensive vacations.

Me, I’ve settled down at home and plan to stay warm.
