That could stymie efforts by officials to get passengers back into a transit system that has struggled to lift passenger numbers from the pandemic lows. And, as Mayor Eric Adams admits, similar concerns pose challenges to his efforts to get workers back into Manhattan offices.
“The call to get back to work and the safe subway system is the main driver for doing that,” Adams said at a news conference on Monday. “When you have an incident like this, it has a chilling effect. That’s is no way. “

By contrast, Sunday’s attacker fired a single shot, hitting 48-year-old Daniel Enriquez, who was on his way to lunch in Manhattan.
Enriquez, a researcher at investment bank Goldman Sachs, is the fourth person to die in the shipping system this year. The subway is undeniably safe – most of the time. According to police statistics, a similar death toll was recorded at this time last year. Major felony crimes on buses and subways make up just 2% of the city’s total crime, about the same level as before the pandemic, but the number of riders is 40 percent lower.

Officials in Newark clearly hope the studios will be an economic jumpstart. What about the new studios that opened not far away in places like Jersey City and Kearny in New Jersey? Can you say they boosted the economies there?
It’s hard to say for sure, as they haven’t been open for that long. However, state officials say the demand for space in current New Jersey sound zones often exceeds capacity. There is also an economic boost from side businesses, said Darryl Isherwood, senior adviser for film and digital media at the state Economic Development Authority. “Tool rentals. Truck rentals. All that stuff is money spent in New Jersey,” he said.
What is the forecast of gains for Newark?
According to a report done for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, the project could lead to between 500 and 600 permanent on-site jobs, including positions in catering establishments. .
The same report estimates that in time, Lionsgate Newark could create 300 to 400 new jobs nearby.
Where else can we expect shows to be filmed or taped?
A major project, 1888 Studios, is slated for a former giant refinery in Bayonne. The developers claim it will be the largest manufacturing complex built from scratch in North America.
Netflix, though for the first time reduce subscribers for 10 years, has confirmed that it intends to submit a bid next month to purchase an approximately 300-acre parcel of land in Fort Monmouth, a defunct military base on the Jersey Shore. If built, the project will be Netflix’s second-largest production site, after ABQ Studios in New Mexico.
Maybe I should start with this question: Why are all these studios raising prices, and why in a relatively expensive area of New York?
New Jersey has a particularly high population of union workers who specialize in the jobs needed to produce film and television content. That’s probably due to its proximity to New York City. These are the people you don’t fly to to shoot with, so having a local workforce is important.
But didn’t tax breaks pull manufacturers to New Jersey?
It’s correct. One law which Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, signed in early 2021 increased the amount of money available to film production or construction companies in New Jersey. Legislators also expanded tax reduction through 2034. That gives companies hoping to build studios here a degree of confidence that the credits won’t disappear immediately when Murphy’s term ends in 2026.
Why is New Jersey betting that many producers and actors may not want to continue working in Georgia?
Last spring, after Georgia passed the law restrict voter accessMurphy wrote to industry leaders who are openly trying to steal business from that state, which has a similar and long-standing film industry that is also getting tax breaks. By referring to “shared values,” he is appealing to the left-wing politics of many associated with the film and film industries with a history in Hollywood.
He made a similar argument in 2019 after the governor of Georgia signed what was at the time considered one of the The most restrictive abortion law domestic.
