Need to Find a Bathroom in New York City? Try TikTok.
Alanna Ramirez, who grew up in New York and manages a brewery in the Bronx, follows Miss Siegel’s TikTok account, has shared Ms Siegel’s Google Maps with friends and recently submitted bathroom locations. She said that she and her friends had been hoping for years that someone would create such a resource.
“When I saw TikTok, I sent it to everyone,” said 26-year-old Ramirez. “I was, like, it finally happened.”
Wansoo Im, an associate professor at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, was inspired to create his own community resource map, Toilets in New Yorkbecause of the difficulty he faced during a city visit with his family in 2004.
Nearly two decades after he first published the map, Dr. Im, 56, says he still hears from people using it. “I still get emails, every now and then, how much they appreciate it,” he said.
Alice Xiao, who works in the tech industry, recently started a mapping app, Toodle Loo, has resource-focused bathroom locations in New York and other cities. She says she prides herself on making bathrooms easier to find.
Ms. Xiao, 26, said: “There is strength in community and sharing.
For some people, a map and list of restrooms is a necessity. In the state of New York, Colitis and Crohn’s Disease Equity Act requires businesses to let people with certain medical conditions use employee-only restrooms if public restrooms are not available.
