NBC Sports reports the most watched Derby matches since 2019

Just like Churchill Downs Inc. reported record interest to Kentucky Derby Day in total betting, NBC reported strong viewership.

While the network will report full viewership on May 9, it said preliminary figures indicate that this year’s Kentucky Derby match presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) drew more than 16 million viewers. That number would make it the most-watched Derby since 2019. 2019 was a particularly popular one as Run for the Roses that year delivered a 10.9/25 rating overnight — fitting matching 1992 is the best overnight rating since 1990.

The preliminary figures for 2022 show a trend towards the pre-COVID-19 numbers. The 2020 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) has been postponed due to the pandemic and moved to the first Saturday in September. While the 2021 TV ratings aren’t directly impacted by the pandemic, audience numbers are limited — affecting a bit the broadcast’s usual highlight image.

Last year’s race that covered Derby on NBC averaged 14.37 million viewers, peaking at 15.7 million in the 15 minutes of the race.

This year, NBC Sports covered the Derby on NBC and Peacock with race coverage starting at 2:30pm. NBC Sports also covers Kentucky Oaks Day, May 6 from Churchill Downswith coverage starting at 1 p.m. on US Network.
