National Dog Show 2021 on Thanksgiving start times, TV schedule, live streams and past winners
The National Dog Show returns this Thursday to continue the 20-year tradition of Thanksgiving Day.
The National Dog Show began in 1879 and has been held every year since 1933, including in 2020 when most events didn’t happen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s dog show is taking place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa. The actual contest runs on Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 21, but the pre-broadcast is always on Thanksgiving.
Only 600 dogs were allowed to participate in this year’s competition, compared to the 2,000 dogs that normally enter. The American Kennel Club, which sanctioned the event, recognizes 197 different breeds that are allowed to compete.
Here’s a guide to everything you need to know about the National Dog Show 2021, including a full TV schedule and history of previous winners.

What is the National Dog Show?
The National Dog Show is an annual competition held on Thanksgiving Day by the American Kennel Club. 197 different breeds are allowed to participate, but not all breeds appear every year.
There are three different titles the dogs can win in the competition. In the first round, dogs of the same breed compete against each other to determine how well each dog fits the breed’s standards. The winners of this round become “Best of the Breed”, and these dogs continue to the second round.
In round two, the winning dogs from round one were dispersed into seven different groups: athletic, hunting, working, hunting, toy, non-sporting and herding. The dogs are judged here on how well they fit the standards of their breed. A “First of the Breed” winner is named from each group. The winning dogs will advance to the final round, which is “Best in Show.” The dog that wins this final round will become the main winner of the National Dog Show.

It is the most watched dog show every year, bringing in nearly 20 million viewers each Thanksgiving.
