NASA Astronomical Image of February 18, 2023: Magnificent Galaxy from the Webb . Telescope

NASA astronomical image for February 18, 2023: Since the launch of NASA’s most expensive and advanced eye in the sky – the James Webb Space Telescope – it has not stopped sending stunning images. NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day presents a fascinating snapshot of the large barred Spiral Galaxy, also known as NGC 1365 that was captured by the James Webb Telescope. Located in the constellation Andromeda, the red swirls surrounding the galaxy indicate recent star formation and potential locations of future star nurseries.

Just 56 million light-years away, NGC 1365 is a giant barred spiral galaxy about 200,000 light-years across. Amazingly, that’s twice the size of our barred spiral Milky Way! NASA explains: “Astronomers suspect the gravitational field of the NGC 1365 rod played a key role in the evolution of the galaxy, sending gas and dust into a star-forming vortex and eventually sending matter into the supermassive black hole, the center of the active galaxy.”

The Technology Behind Webb .’s Barriered Spiral Galaxy telescope

This sharp image from the James Webb Space Telescope’s Medium Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals the stunning details of this magnificent spiral in infrared light. The intricate web of dust filaments and bubbles created by young stars along spiral arms winding from the galaxy’s central bar.

What is a barred spiral galaxy?

Spiral galaxies are characterized by a rotating disk containing spiral arms extending from a dense central region. The Milky Way is an example of a spiral galaxy.

There are four main types of galaxies – spiral, barred spiral, elliptical, and irregular. Spiral galaxies are distinguished by their complex structure, including a central bulge inside a rotating disk that exhibits a spiral pattern originating from the bulge. These galaxies are often surrounded by sparsely populated halos, quasi-spherical regions above and below the disk plane.

In contrast, barred spiral galaxies have arms that do not extend to the center but are connected to a straight stellar bar containing the nucleus at its center.
